I need a couple new engine case studs. Does anyone sell these?
Also, where is the best place to have a cam and lifters ground? |

#41 here? http://www.ratwell.com/technical/Microfiche/t200210.gif
If yes, they are part number 021 101 145 B. They are 12 x 1,5 A/M10 x 175. Special studs.
NLA from VW, so I am not sure where Bus Depot will get them from: http://www.busdepot.com/details.jsp?partnumber=021101145B
But at $26 each..... I would put a want ad in the classifieds. I am sure there are people out there with cases they can remove the studs from :) |

#34 is part number N01034510, size is AM8Ax78
Still available from VW. Either order from your local VW dealer, here: http://www.busdepot.com/details.jsp?partnumber=N01034510 , or get used ones.....
And on your cam and lifter 'resurfacing'...... I would not waste any $$ doing that. In the long run, you should get a new cam and lifters that are a matched set. You will, more than likely, have premature failure due to a hardness mis-match. |

| You mean my VW dealership would have them in stock? Weird. I didn't think they carried aircooled stuff. Do you know how much it'll run me? |

#30:
Takes 2 of them. Part number N 14 395 3 and is 8 x 42.
VW also shows a second #(30) with an x quantity as 10 x 48 and part number N 14 560 1
But both are NLA...... |

| Would this be the right one? These studs are very confusing. |

Apologies for the huge thread necromancy, but I ordered N01034510 and it showed up today as a bolt that looks similar to #35 in the diagram :?
Is it possible to put the two case halves back together with the stud missing, and then slot it in when it arrives? I don't like the idea of halving my rebuild held up by a stupid stud if I can help it. |

The two studs you need #30 8x42 and # 34 8x78 should be available from any good automotive store like napa auto parts.
I do have these but, i think if you gave Jake Raby a call he could pull them from an old case too.
not sure what city you are in but, you could also find these studs in a good hardware store as well
8mm.x 1.25 thread pitch 42 m.m. is approx. 1 3/4 inch
80 m.m. is approx. 3 1/4 inch
the problem with leaving them out that you cannot torque the case properly and will damage the case threads trying to install them with
case buttoned up. good luck.. |

So how do you remove the bolts 41 and 45? I have the engine seperated and apart, I am just wondering how to remover those bolts.
I want to send this case to Jake when I buy the camper special, and I know it will be way easier (cheaper) to send it with those bolts out.
Do I use heat, with a double nut on the end? Last thing I want to do is damage something on this case.
These are the bolts I need to remove

| I've had luck with a vice grip on the non-threaded part, but be careful not to put too much pressure on it. |
