View original topic: gear oil in my CV Joint and Boot!

Neuman! Does this mean I have an oil seal on the drive flange leaking or something like that? When I took all the inner cv joint bolts out, oily goo came running out like thin gear oil.
How big of issue is this? Can I re-pack the CV and not worry about it or will this lead to a CV failure by having more gear oil leak into the CV and boot?

Thanks,

Paul

The blue / black output plastic cap in the center of the transmission / drive alxe output shaft is loose or finish.

(you don't see it on the picture because of the grease but it's in the center.

are the seals easy to replace? Where do I get them?

Thanks,

Paul

They are really easy to replace. Just poke a hole and pry out the old, clean up the area, snap the new ones in place and apply a small amount of sealer around the perimeter.

By the time you add shipping, purchasing these from the dealer might be cheaper, but Van-Cafe has them.

Use the write-ups found here on the Samba (and elsewhere on the 'net). This is a surprisingly easy job to do. Messy, but easy. When I replace my seals I took the opportunity to drain and replace my gear oil, too.

FYI - I checked the dealer close by - Campbell Nelson VW - Dude said they would have to order from germany....

Another 'higher than average' local indy (Bow wow) has them for $7.50 each though.

the one I pulled out (drivers side) was snug and I can not see where it could have been leaking from. The passenger side is not leaking and looks good.

All this just to add a vehicle speed sensor, but i would not have known the CV was full of oil instead of grease. That is one good thing about doing a conversion, you really get into a lot of stuff that you would not have checked until a problem occured.

Just reinstall your old one using some kind of sealer around the edges. Could be too that what ever kind of grease was used in the CV joint on that side is separating, the oil and base no longer staying mixed.
