I was working on my wife's 1970 beetle and while adjusting the wiring some of the spade clips broke off. I have had a problem getting the blinkers to work to begin with. I viewed the wiring diagram for my year(thanks Samba) and am a little stumped.
The wiring I have is a green wire with white black tracers connected to a blue wire by a spade adapter. I have a brown wire, a white wire, a green with yellow tracer wire.
I also have a black with green and white tracer coming out of the hole in the drivers side opining under the speaker. It is really short and only comes out about 2 inches.
It hard to see but you can see the spade clip
This is the original flasher
It has 4 clips. The bottom is labeled p for one spade l for one spade x for one spade and the fourth is not labled.
The new flasher is this one
It is labled 49+ 31- 40a L
Can anyone tell me how to wire the unit back up?
Also I would love to replace the original fuse panel with one that takes atc/ato fuses?
Thank you for any help. |

Hello,
I am in the process of rewiring my 72 and just did some of that area today!
Now I'm not sure about the wiring differences between a 70 and a 72 but maybe this could be somewhat helpful so please use this only as a reference.
This is based on what I did and saw today while I was replacing most of the original wiring and using the wiring diagram that came with my new wiring harness for a 72 std beetle:
The short black/white/green wire coming up from the hole is from the turn signal switch and connects with the black/white/green and blue wires.
The black/white/green wire goes to slot #49a for the flasher relay. The two blue wires connect to #49 on the emergency flash switch and the dash indicator light.
The brown wire is a ground wire and likely connects to a ground tab on the chassis but also may have come off the speedometer housing. Follow it and see where it goes.
The white wire I believe connects slot 49 on the flasher relay to the "+" terminal on the emergency flasher switch.
Not sure about the green/yellow wire.
I don't think you'll have a problem with the new flasher relay. The original was a 3 prong and the one you have is the proper replacement. The 4 prong flasher you removed is likely a universal style. The fuse box "deck" where the flasher relay mounts is only wired at 3 of the slots anyway. The new relay goes in with the "third" blade towards the dash.
Again, please use this only as a reference and I hope you get it figured out!

I know you posted this a while ago, but I couldn't help noticing your question on the flasher terminals. Current replacement for the flasher is a small box type flasher normally used on the 71-later VWs, both air and water cooled. Terminals have similar numbers, but is wired as follows: There is no KBL terminal, there is only +49, 49a and 31. They are wired the same way as above for the 4 terminal model. The Blue/Green Wire that would normally be for your dash light (KBL) is "piggybacked" with the Black/Green/White Wire to terminal 49a.
Original 3 terminal flasher, mid year 1968, Original VW Part # 211-953-215, 215A, 215B:
This flasher internally grounds to the chassis thru the hold-down screw that attaches the flasher to the dash support bracket.
Terminal + or +49 = Black Wire - goes to terminal + on the Emergency Flasher Switch
Terminal 49a = Black w/Green and White Stripes Wire (two of them actually) - goes to terminal 49a on Emergency Switch, 2nd wire goes to Turn Signal Switch.
Terminal KBL = Blue w/Green Stripe Wire = Goes to the Signal Indicator Light in the Speedo. This information is avalible from Airhead parts at http://www.airheadparts.com/page.asp?recId=29 |

I also went through this exact problem with a 71 super.
Question
Do your 4 ways work? If not then you have a prob with your 4 ways switch. The turn signals are controlled by position of 4 way switch.Check that switch!
If your 4 ways do work and signals don't,check your turn signal on steering column after you have checked all other wiring as well
Mine turned out to be a combo of both switches!
GOOD LUCK and you do have the correct wiring diagram and you should also get a copy of the index for the same diagram

| Unless Im wrong you should still be able to pick up a 4 prong flasher relay. When I bought mine for my '64 I needed the 3 prong that you have pictured but with your later model bug you need the 4 prong I believe. |

4 terminal wiring>
The power for the signals starts at the emergency flasher switch and goes to the flasher unit then either back to the emergency switch, if it's on, or to the signal switch and on to the bulbs.
The emergency switch has both permanent power (#30) and switched power (#15) supplied to it. When on, it supply's power from #30 to the flasher unit so the key does not need to be on. When off it supply's power to the flasher from #15 so the key has to be on.
The switches actually physically come apart and you can buy some time if you use a nylon tie to hold it together.

Here's where you will see the three prong is for the earlier model cars.

I still think you need a 4 prong relay, but you would wire the 3 prong this way.
31 = Ground
+49 = first terminal on fuse block (farthest on drivers side)
49a = the green/black/white wire thats spliced with a small blue wire that routes back threw the dash into the blinker switch on the steering wheel. |
