I have a '72 fastback and i'm trying to buy front/rear shock absorbers.
Are the front ones the same units as the rear (same as rear bug IRS)?
The part codes looks similar, only the type 3 one begins with 311 instead of 113.
Thank you.

OK, got it, it's not the same unit front and rear, there is a "minor" difference, the rubber "silentblocs?" in the ends of the shock are narrower on the front absorber.

Normally for the front I'll use bug link pin shocks. For the rear, standard IRS shocks work fine.

Yes, the sleeve is shorter. So ask for Link-pin (53-65) Bug front shocks, or swing axle (53-68) rear shocks for the front.

I use the link pin front shocks.
