Hi Everybody,
I have a 72 super w/1600 and 34 PICT-3 carb. It starts and warms up good. But when the elect choke steps down all the way, it spits and sputters for a few seconds then stalls. I have seen other people chatting about this same problem. Alot say there is a loss in vacuum somewhere throughout the intake system. I have done the starting fluid tip and found no leakage except for a little bit at the butterfly valve shaft where it goes through the carb casing.
My Question is this:
What the vacuum pressure at idle?
Take the reading just below carb on nipple on plenum.

Can somebody please help?
Thanks

Have you checked your idle sensor? I'm pretty sure the car will warm up on the choke with a bad sensor, but as soon as the choke kicks out it will stall. Have someone turn the key to the on position several times while you listen for it. It should click every time the key is turned on.

There is no idle sensor in a '72 carbed Beetle. Do you mean the idle cut off solenoid? Test that by pulling the wire on and off 10 times and listen for 10 clicks.(key on)

Sounds like a vac leak. Your vac at that port should be steady at 18 - 22 in.

A leak at the choke shaft is OK but a leak at the throttle shaft would be your problem. If you have an original 34PICT3 I'd get the shaft re-bushed rather than buy a new carb.

Does your air cleaner have a vac line to it? Potential leaks if it does.
