| I have a chance to pick up another buggy that has been sitting for many years and the guy who has possession of it has no pink slip. How hard is it to get it titled in my name? Anyone had recent experience? I did this with a Fiat Multipla many many years ago and it was easy. |

I haven't done this for a long time, but one thing is certain - you will need a VIN inspection. I did this with a '63 Ghia that had no motor, and the officer didn't seem to care about that. As long as the VIN is out of the system it should be pretty easy to get a new title.
The only thing that could be an issue is the fact that it's a buggy and not a Bug. You will want the title to reflect a non-smog year (assuming that's what the pan is), so try to find a VIN inspector who is "buggy friendly". I know of one, so there should be others.

Apply for a replacement title as a Volkswagen with the year/model identified by the chassis serial number. Don't identify it as a buggy or a special construction vehicle or anything other than a Volkswagen.
It will also help to have the current owner provide a written statement of fact explaining how/when he obtained the vehicle, where its been stored and what became of the title if the owner knows. |

I just did a 70 firebird in Arizona.
it was a donated car with no paper.
the previous owner is a local attorney and the car has sat for 15+ years....California blue plates.
I had power of attorney from the attorney that donated the car, Becuase he was too lazy to do the paperwork himself.
I still had to jump thru many DMV hoops to register the car in Arizona and finally had to get the car bonded (bonded title)becuase the California DMV purged the pink slip.
Yes I had power of attorney from the last registered owner (the attorney that donated the car) and still had to bond  It's all about the paper trail as the car was out of the system in California and someone at the California DMV was too Lazy to get on the computer and work that day.
I'd start by getting the Vin numbers and call DMV to see what a pain it would be to find the last registered owner......or go bonded for $100+ and try to knock a few $100 off the purchase price for the agrivation....
I think there is a law on the books?? and IMO
You should not legally be able to sell a car without a title.
I know of an 87 Jeep Wrangler for a good price today $1500.
Of coarse no title  current owner bought it for parts and didnt care to get paperwork, now sitting 3 years the wife wants it gone.....seller doesnt remember who he bought it from.
It's No wonder for the last 20 years I cant find my stolen 72 240z and I know who took it. |

You may want to go to this page....
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/vc/vc_index_c.htm#certofownership
And read some articles/rules under this sub title "CERTIFICATE OF OWNERSHIP/TITLE"...
IF you get bug/buggy and while going through registration processes, DO NOT volunteer any information, only answer the questions.... Any information you volunteer only confuses the drones behind the counter....

| If it is out of dmv system it can be tricky. If you have a pink it is easier but wth no pink it takes a little finess. Bring bill of sale, etc to dmv and ask to register it. Do NOT take the buggy at this time. If all goes well they will issue a 30 day sticker. Always say myVW or my bug, NEVER refer to it as a buggy. Once this step is complete then bring it in for a vin verification. It can be best to print out vw vins by year NEVER, I repeat, NEVER let them reference your car as special construction on any paperwork. Period! Once it is done you may as well scrap the project for meltdown. Special construction requires 2008 smog and safety standards. You might camp out at dmv on Jan 1 and hope to be one of the 500 special construction titles issued in the state for the entire year. They are usually gone by 9:20 AM. If you have no success at one dmv leave and go to another on another day. Dont argue, beg, cry, or threaten, otherwise they will note on computor those two nasty words: special construction. |

| If it's not in the system you walk in & say I lost my paperwork in the fires. (they feel bad & help you out). Then you apply for a duplicate title for your what ever year vw type 1. cost is about $17.00. |

| How can you request a duplicate title when the title was never in your name to begin with? |

| Went to the DMV in Brawley today and it was a piece of cake. Even with the last time it was registered was '00. The receit the owner wrote out said buggy on it and that's the way the girl at DMV called it (street legal that is). Got my temp tag. Next step is to take it to them and have them look at it. What does the Calif DMV look at when brought in? Horn, signals, parking brake, etc? |

| All they did when they inspected mine was make sure the VIN matched the paperwork. I asked the cop if he needed to verify any safety equipment, but the cop said no, that it isn't needed until it hits the streets. At that point, it is supposed to have everything the car had originally (lights, signals, parking brake, seat belts, etc.). |
