View original topic: How to replace the generator belt?

I'm going to try to replace mine tomorrow (or the next day) on my '71 Fasty. I've read two different ways of going about it. (1) Use a slim wrench to hold the generator pulley from turning as you loosen the nut to separate the pulley halves. That's the Bentley version. I've also read a post elsewhere that says (2) it's a pretty simple matter to remove the strap and shift the generator forward and out of the shroud for easier access.

I don't have the slim wrench. I was going to go the second route rather than go shopping for tools. Anyone want to tell me the second method is a horrific disaster in the making and I shouldn't go that route?

The "method" is to unbolt the generator strap and tilt the rear the rear of the generator UP allowing you to slip the belt off the generator pulley without disturbing the pulley nut/pulley halves/shims/adjustment!

Be sure when you put it back, the line on the generator lines up with the dot on the strap. This lines up the cooling hole with the fan housing.
Do not run the belt too tight, as you can damage the lower pulley.

Thanks. Appreciate the feedback.

The original size is a 9.5mm x 1000mm

The replacements your will find are probably going to be in inches.
Gates number 7395.
That is a 39.5" long. The picture of the pulley I posted before had a 39" belt on it. Too tight.

Got it done this morning. Piece of cake. I appreciate the help. I used a sharpie to mark the generator and strap to be certain it went back in exactly the same spot.
