Hey folks, I have pulled a 72 super out of the shed I bought in about 86 as a parts car for the 72 my son eventially totaled. After the total he put all the remaining good parts in the one I have now and he's decided he wants it to fix up. He's now 40 but still hasn't worn any of his cars out. The body's usually can't stand his driving habits.
Any way the car originally had air and the car came without a motor. He put the 60k motor out of the first car in it and it runs pretty good. It doesn't have the compressor bracket. We've got everything except the compressor bracket and the front condensor cooling fans. I have a bug I built in about 68 that has 64 air updated to 12 vdc. and the compressor bracket is still on it so I can copy it and modify it to hold a smaller compressor that now should be much easier to come by. I thought I might look at the compressors on the real small compacts.
The dual port intake will be a added challenge for the space it seems.
The front cooling fans are the biggest problem. The mounting plate and fans are not with the car and we never had them. I say two fans because the wire has two plugs for the 12vdc supply. They are probably about 6 inch fans.
a close friend used to be into bugs and still has a bunch of stuff but he only had air on type threes. He actually remade his bracket and the vw dealer asked him to make some more because the originals were so crappy. He is a retired machinist by trade. He still has a type three 2.0 with a roller crank motor setting in his pasture. It is a automatic he used to drag race. When he has time I will look at the stuff he has. I don't remember how a type three cooled the condensor.
On my 64 I moved one of the condensors from under the motor to the bottom of the spare tire well and made a small fiberglass scoop under the bottom with a fan to cool the condensor. I blocked of the lower area of the well to the trunk area. I made the sedan into a pickup so it cooled really good. At the time I was not to good on air so I took it to the vw dealer and they thought it was a good install and charged it for me. It has controls all over the car. It has a 67 1500 with a hydralic cam and two barrel chev carb I rejeted and would go 95 with the air on so I was pretty happy till the new toyotas showed up in about 72.
In texas a vw with air gets pretty slow but it will make a ok commuter to work I guess. His regular ride is a mega ram dodge diesel so he's hoping to drive something that uses regular.
Any ideas are appreciated. |
