View original topic: Opinions on diff types of full flow systems?

Okay, after several hours of searching and reading, I am going to ask the question that I can't seem to find any info on:

Of the two types of full flow, which is better and why?

1. The one that has you tap your case for the return
2. The one that has both in and out hoses going through the pump cover (Anybody running Raby's full flow?).

Also, while I'm at it, I have a 73 SB 1600DP and no doghouse, is it better to add a new shroud/cooler or just get an aftermarket external cooler and plumb into the full flow?

Option 2 had small restrictive oil passages.

Option 1 is the way to go.

You will find that the general consensus on here is that the first way is the best way. Possibly possible if the engine is together...cake if it's apart.

Yeah, like Glenn/Sigurd mentioned, I would go with option 1. Most of the systems that involve option 2 have the smaller oil passages, but I haven't seen one of Jake's though. Maybe Jake will chime in with some info. As for your stock 1600DP, I would find all the needed parts to put the factory doghouse cooler with all of the factory tin back on. If you need an extra oil cooler, which you shouldn't for a stock 1600, you could add the extra cooler into the full flow lines in addition to the stock cooler.

The in and out is restrictive but it will work for a stock 1600 cc engine. It will even work for a 1776 with a stock cam. If you look at a picture of Dean Lowry's old 11 second sand rail it has an in and out oil pump/ filter.

The Maxipump -3 is fine for most motors. There is a little pressure drop at high er RPM but it isnt all that much. In a stock motor you are not going to be doing 7000 RPM either. Just if you buy one get an exra cover gasket

What is the Raby way?

Don't have experience with this, but it's another option...

You loose your cooler bypass with that.

My way only works for the type 4.

Thanks for all the replies. Any insight on my other question. Basically, I don't have a doghouse set up on my '73 1600dp and am wondering which way to go:

1. Get a doghouse shroud + stock cooler?
2. Keep stock shroud + aftermarket cooler plumbed into full flow system?

BTW, where I live it regularly gets over 90deg in the summer, highs over 100.

Upgrade to a dog house shroud and cooler.

Ok, so if I go with a new doghouse, a few more questions:

1. Can I keep my stock fan?
2. In addition to a new shroud, I think I need to replace the tin between the shroud and the firewall also bc this is specific to a doghouse, right?
3. I need to get the stock oil cooler and the adapter plate. Anything else to bolt up cooler?
4. Empi shrouds any good? Not finding much else out there for aftermarket.

I appreciate the help and this should about cover it- sorry for being a noob.

You need a new OEM shroud.. .forget aftermarket. You need a stock wider fan, the "front" tin for the doghouse and the correct linkage rod for the flaps.
