question on the beams? are you running narrowed at all or disk or anything like that right now i have a kwc 5" narrowed with no shock towers so im going to have to replace it with a beam with a shock tower want the tucked look 2" is norm but dont know if i need the more expensive 4"

Grindmasterj Sun Mar 14, 2010 4:32 pm

joined the darkside

up

with a little bit of air like 50 psi(25 per side)

no air

i love it but im gonna be getting bigger lines and a better compressor and a tank

Anyone ever use a set of Air shocks for the rear? If so how did that work and is it worth doing ? or anyone have a link to some one that has done it of any Info on it.. I want to put air ride on my 66 beetle for fun i was thinking at first of only doing the front but now i might do all 4. trying to find the best way to do this with out busting the bank ? Any Info on this ?

there are experiences with rear air shocks in this thread....

Two days ago I installed a set of air shocks on the rear of my car. Purchased at Kragen Auto Parts, Monroe part#MA803

So far they work really well. Super simple bolt in installation; no shimming for the lower bolt required. It took me more time to figure out exactly where I wanted to put the three-way valve than it did for the rest of the install, lol.

And, And, And . . . .
How did they work on the rear ?
I want to eliminate the rear torsion bars and replace them with the heim kit, can I use the airshocks in the back without the torsions ?

I have bags if not but it sure would be nice to bolt a set on and go.

Thanks to all that have added to this !

Here are my plans.
69 Ghia with 8 spoke 195/50s
narrowed beam with no torsion bars, dropped spindles and air shocks.
torsion bars removed to put on heim kit and bags or air shocks...

I have read that a 69 cant have a 4" beam and I have read that a 69 can have no more than a 4" beam. Thinking about no body mods, just bolt on.
Anyone have anyidea ? and then I will look into the shocks

No you cannot use airshocks in the rear without torsions. Air bags yes, no problem. The air shocks will not handle the weight on there own.

Im thinking of ordering from the States as in the UK these shocks are very hard to find!! I have air on the front already but like many of you on here im 15mm from laying the beam. Im running smart tyres, 4" narrowed beam, Flipped track rods and dropped disc spindles.

CAN SOMEONE CONFIRM B4 I ORDER THAT THIS ITEM IS THE CORRECT PART FOR THE FRONT OF MY BUG!!!!!

yes - MA756's fit the front (ball joint) fine.

forget about the application - go with the part number. go to monroe's website yourself and double check if you are that concerned. all this stuff can easily be found with Google in 5 minutes.

re: the T3 notch. the air doesn't work that way (ie: 50 psi is not 25psi per side). If it's a separate system side to side / front to back, then it would, but if it's shared, then it's the same pressure.

also - i've had bugs with torsions and airshocks. to get that kind of height i bet you had to max it out and then go lift the front up

notchnem65 Mon Apr 19, 2010 12:31 pm

If you are talking about my notch. No, it is not maxed out in those pics and definately did not have to pick up the front. Everything is controlled from drivers seat and works great. I had about 90psi in those pics, and it still rides great even with 90psi. I normally drive with about 60psi front and 80psi rear. The main thing for these to work right is having good compressor, fittings, and lines.

Just though I'd share a little drawing I made for someone of how I extended my shock towers on a BJ beam. I didn't have a camera with when I did the mods so it was the old pencil and paper for me.

Beam now lays on the ground even with 135/80 tyres.

That's running some Armstrong air shocks but they appear to be suspiciously similar to the Monroes. :)

I got a rebuilt balljoint frontend with sway aways installed put the monroe 756s on and took the screw out of the adjusters so it would go as low as it could but after driving everyday like this for a little over a month my trailing arms now rock 1/4" to almost 1/2" side to side and the steering is getting BAD..... so I was thinking i would take the torsion bars out and replace them with the airkweld through rods along with new bearings  hoping that will cure my problem

hoghead5150 Sat May 08, 2010 12:09 am

either that, or cheaper and easier to just leave the adjuster bolt in. only remove the lower bolt that actually sets the height.

Fryed74 Sat May 08, 2010 10:58 am

but wont that still destroy the thrust bearings from turning left and right on them ?

hoghead5150 Sat May 08, 2010 11:27 am

nope

Anyone tried to remove the 7/16" fine thread air fitting attachment from the air shock (these are Gabriel Hijackers for the front of my '69 type 1 - ball joint)? I'm wondering if they're threaded into the nut that's welded onto the shock body (part #2 in pic).

Stated another way, can I unscrew part #1 from part #2 in this pic?

* edit - spoke to tech support at Gabriel - the answer is "no - you can't take the shock apart there."

So I'm getting ready to put air shocks on the front of my 72 bug. I've read this thread completely through a couple of times, PM'd with Bugninva, looked around E-bay and the VWVortex air suspension forums. I think I'm pretty well informed on the subject.

I have some indecision as far as what tank and compressor I should run. Right now, I'm only running air shocks in the front. Eventually I'll probably add bags to the rear, and a train horn. Because of all of the load that will be on the tank EVENTUALLY, I was thinking of going with a 5 gallon tank. But I'm wondering if a 2 or 3 gallon tank may be sufficient?

Also, as far as compressor. I don't want to run a $5 Wal Mart tire inflator (no offense), but I'd hate to spend $400 for dual viairs. I really only want to run a single compressor, because I won't be playing with the switches, but I'm also concerned about the load on the electrical system. Can you guys recommend a good compressor for my system?

The through rods and the delrin bushings will cure the problem guaranteed.

Run a 2 gallon tank so you can hide it unless you plan on playing with it while your driving. Then larger is better but the strain on the compressor will be greater and that will cause more strain on your charging system. Run a single Viair 280 and call it a day. It works well and it only puts out a low draw so that the car will not hesitate as dual 4380's will.

If you want to run a simple system, you can go with a 2 valve similar to this http://store.airkewld.com/e-shop-online/suspension/miscellaneous/2-valve-air-management-system.html or you can get a tank http://store.airkewld.com/e-shop-online/suspension/miscellaneous/2-gallon-air-tank.html and a small 280 compressor like this http://store.airkewld.com/e-shop-online/suspension/miscellaneous/air-ride-compressor.html

I hope this helps.
