so...here is the sinario... couple of days ago I go out to see if I can see what my rough idling problem is (ruff to start but then smoothed out after warm, could still hear a bit of a miss though) after checkin wire connects plug replacing them, i leaned on the distributor cap and..daadaa smooth idle when I played with the wire from the coil, and even better when coil and number one were played with...drive down to import shop and order plug wires,, noticed that when i pulled in to shop, she wanted to stall at an idle ( must be the wire?) Oh i should add that i have been have some minor issues with ignition switch( sometime had to fiddle with it to get the starter to ingauge) so when i come back out from the shop car won't start and iginition won't ingauge....(&%#***) typical...plug wires show up two days later change them out, fiddle with ignition....get one got solid 10 sec turn over and aside from one lill badapa sounds like a dry turn over..(@&%*$$$$$) ask the guy at the shop to have look at it, they say fuel pump is full of rust...need new tank and pump,filter... could it be with the ignition? what are your much more vw experienced thoughts on the matter?

Did you clean the tank and replace the filter like "the guys at the shop" told you to????

I m just reading the instructions right now...ps i am a vw newbie and a pre 90 (beside motorbikes) newbie ...go easy on me, my plan of ation is to clean tank, filter, line, and flush pump, like the good book (how to keep you vw alive for idiots) says

You do not say whether the car is fuel injection or carbs, and if carbs, what carbs are they??

Did you try starting it with starter fluid? If it will run on starter fluid then your mechanic is RIGHT! Drain the tank and filter the gas through a rag. New filter and filtered gas might fix it!

warning:

never use starting fluid to test, use carb cleaner instead...
