I've recently come into possession of a VW engine with a code beginning in "AB." The complete code is as follows - AB 49 1246. From what I've gathered, this is a 1300 dual port(!?) produced between 1970 and 1973. Any more info would be greatly appreciated, as I've just dropped this in my car, and am hoping I will not be powered by a generator motor.

| european 1300DP engine from a bug, basically debored 1600DP engine. Solex 31PICT3 or Solex 31PPICT4 carb. |

| Might you know if this engine used heads equivalent to a 1600dp, or heads that were custom tailored for this purpose? |

The 1300 dp heads are different from the 1600 ones. Smaller cylinder register diameter. The inlet manifold is different, too (smaller diameter), the end pieces and central section are not interchangeable.
That is a good engine, but a 1600 would perform a lot better :). |

| thanks for the input so far guys. i got the engine in and running, but pretty rough. at the moment i'm running a 34 PICT and the stock distributor, which I will replace tomorrow with a 30/31 and an 009, respectively. the one thing I haven't quite determined is where i should set the timing(?). and of course, if anyone has some more info or tips about this engine i'd love to hear them. |
