what is the maxuim pressure the system will take? part shop punched n the vw number and came up with a replacement for 278, but i shyed away cause of the 125 max..thought i sould ask someone..anyone had any luck with other pumps for 71-73 fi 1600s? any words of wisdom? miricals?

Tops out between 60-80 pounds, never gets there because the pressure regulator in the engine bay bleeds off to maintain 30. If that clogs, pump has a bypass; not sure when that opens, but it dumps excess back to the tank.

how studry is the regulator ? if I hook up the one with 125 max you think it will cause problems?

Probably. It's just a spring and seat, so you may overpower the spring.

You want about 20-30 PSI more than what the system pressure is calling for.
Any more than that an it is hard on components.
I ran a 85 Ford Ranger pump on my 71 fastback for about 5 years. It worked. and only cost $25 at the salvage yard.

jim adney over at vwtype3.org rebuilds them and has many parts. less than a new one for sure.

It seems that corrosion, gunk and leaky gaskets are the main failure modes, not wearout. This is probably because of a flaw in the VW design that puts the pump at the low point of the fuel loop, where water will settle if the car isn't driven, and so the tank gains condensation (or water through a leaky overflow hose).

Often, though, if you disassamble it, clean any rust, clean the gunk, replace the rubber parts, and carefully reassemble, it can work almost good as new.

This is what Jim does, and he has the judgment to know before he gets far into the rebuild if the the job would last, or if your pump is truly junk. I think his effort alone will do a great job of keeping these cars on the road longer. So far he works only the late style pumps.

Use gas or diesel fuel to clean and then get it spinning forwards AND backwards while submerged in diesel! You'll know it's clean & it works!
