Building a motor for a class 5/1600 car,Question what size cam?any head work? cam and crank gear size? Score rulebook tells you what you can't do, so I'm looking for what you can. Getting ready to send out the cases, what machining needs to be done? Any and help would be helpful.

Your best bet is to ask your engine builder if he has experience with this class, most racers don't want to let their secrets out of the bag.

The last time I was at Woods Wheel Works, Jack Woods had a spare one, brand new he wants to sell. I think Fat Performance built it. 602-242-0077

First thing you should do is get a score rulebook... that will answer a lot of your questions. It would also be a good idea to start going to some of the races and hook up with some 5/1600 guys.

I have a new score rule book.for the most part the motor sounds stock except all the balancing you can do and the size of the cam. I'm sure there are other things you can do . I was hoping for some guidance on how and what builders do. I want to build this motor myself as with the rest of the car. The car is strpped and ready for the cage work. I have friends that been racing trucks and buggies but no 5/16oos. this will be a learning experience. Been reading this forum for awhile and got a pretty good direction from it. Now its just time and money

Got out to the races and hook up with the 5/1600 guys. You will find more luck finding them on rece-dezert or the class 5 coalition though.

If you are determined to build your own motor consult with your favorite Cam Grinder for his reccomendation as to the cam grind to use. They are constantly updating and helping other racers to find even one more horsepower. If you ask racers they either don't know due to having motors built for them or will be reluctant (or sometimes even missleading) to share their hard earned information. Remember if the rule book says you can usually you had better. If it says you can not then don't. If in doubt call and ask. Or you may take your chances.

The rule book, I assume your talking SCORE as it is the one everyone uses, only states what you can do, everything else is assumed stock. It dosn't say what you cant do. You are not going to get an engine builders secrets for free, a fat motor will run you 7 to 10,000 dollars and you will get their secrets for that. Building your own race motor for a 5/1600 is not easy because it is a stock 1600 class motor, you can offset grind the crank, there are alot of other secrets that they use to build horsepower. The biggest is compression, my motor is 12.5 to 1, running race gas. I wasted about 1700 bucks before I had a motor built for me. If you want to be competitive, have an engine built right the first time.

Case work, about 700.00 worth, get a set of FAT heads 650.00 a piece, cam, thats inportant but depends on the motor and each builder has a favorite. Dont forget flywheel, clutch and other stuff. There are some secrets to oil flow and pressure too. Not sure on Adam Wik.....

This is all good, Thanks everyone for your input, keep it coming. I'm not so worried about being competitive at first. Just trying to keep the cost down so I can at least run in the sportsman class at first. Been racing motocross for the last 20 yrs so I know there will be a learning process. I plan on a year of sportsman then the 5/1600 class. Talk to the guys over at FAT Perfomance and they said they would send me a catalog but Haven't seen it yet.
