This is what I found when I popped the valve covers off. I'm betting it is the first time they have been taken off since the last millenium (1999). This is the left side (3 and 4) and it is a bit blurry as the light was fading. I was surprised at how clean it looked. Should I have been?

Looks like rebuilt heads.

Anything special I need to do with them in adjusting them and before I snap the valve covers back on?

ya, clean due to fresh rebuild...............or no oil flow to the heads :shock: :lol:

It was sitting since, probably, 1999 with oil in it. I drained the oil in spring 2007 and replaced it immediately. I had turned it a few rotations by hand on Tuesday morning, but that's about as much as it had turned in a decade, I'd bet.

Seemed very weird to me to be so clean.

Of the eight valves, only one needed to be tightened. A second was a close call with my go/no-go feeler gauge. Carb cleaned. Next stop, timing and then it will be time to put gas in and (gulp), turn the key.

Now that I have started her up and have run her for a short while (10 minutes or so), should I pop the valve covers to make sure Fasty 69 is not right and I am getting oil flowing to the heads? How long should I run her before I check to make sure there's evidence of some oil flowing?

there should be oil there right away, oil is pushed thrue the pushrods as soon as you start it up......

or at least it should, mind you it wont run long with no oil pressure anyway......and your warning light will come on as well....if its working.....
