View original topic: Msd box and pertronix drop in. No go right, WRONG
Lawrence_0485 Thu Aug 14, 2008 9:36 pm

Iv'e been playing around with 6AL box iv'e had for a while and never could run it because i run a drop in pertronix module. I have discovered that if you hook up the box and put the neg wire from the module on the points wire from the msd box. Then put the pos wire from the module to the keyed 12V that goes to the box. In order for the elec. chokes to still work, they have to be moved from the hot side of the coil to the keyed 12V. Same goes for the fuel solinoid on some stock carbs. For me this is the best of both worlds. All the Pluses of the CDI box, don't need a freeking pricey dizzy and no points to deal with. If the box happens to die when your out in the middle of no were you can hook the dizzy back up stock to get you home, unlike using a msd dizzy. I'm sure i'm not the only one to figure this out, but i have never seen it on here or any were else. Any one else tried this?

That's why the CDI box has multiple ways to trigger it. Same goes for points useage; if the CDI fries, you can still revert back to points to get home. Nothing new, really.

well i thought that i read on here that msd and pertronix don't agree and i've never seen a diagram on to wire it up, i even checked on msd's web site. If you try to leave the pos wire from the module on the coil and the neg on the points wire on the box NOTHING. If you try to hook the pos and neg wires from the module to the mag pickup wires on the box NOTHING. I just thought i would share my results in case other people want to try the same set up.

Think about it this way: The MSD box is designed to work with points input on the white wire, and all a Pertronics module is is a points replacement module. Why wouldn't it work?

Lawrence, the people who said it didn't work obviously didn't understand what they were doing. This is a wiring diagram I made from existing ones long ago.. it should confirm your arrangement.

Now do you have good way to hook up an existing Auto Meter Pro-Control with MDS-6AL/Pertronix setup...

IN several e-mails with "Auto-Meter" tech rep he stated that PRO-CONTROL was not computable with 6AL box because PRO-CONTROL "only turns off and on power to coils", and was afraid it would damage MSD box with abruptly killing power to box (off-on-off-on sequence of rev limiting) .....

He could not see beyond the basic design of PRO-CONTROL as just a power switch... I see it as a sensor to control "???".... I have my thoughts, but would like to hear from others..... Being it is a "controlled" relay (switch) and contacts are freely assessable for any wiring configuration, makes it possible for "multiple configurations"...

Also you have to move your choke wire and your fuel soliniod (for some stock carbs) to the red 12v swiched wire, because the hot side of the coil is no long ALWAYS hot when they key is on. I checked last night with a multimeter with the ign. on. I didn't mean that no one had ever gotten it to work, or that i was the first to figure it out. It just excited me that i could run my box that iv'e had for 3 yrs now and i thought i would share. I thinks its cool because you can have the benifits of the CDI while not having to spend a butt load on Msd or much less a mallory. Don't get me wrong i'd love to have one of these

but with 8 weeks till the baby gets here that is NOT an option right now :x

my mallory hyfire vi box was the same way. It wouldn't work the way they said to hook it up. I used the diagram for points and it worked just fine. Mallories tech help line was of no help when I called them either.

The diagram shows a MSD Blaster 2 coil. Is it O:K to run one when using a Pertronix with a MSD ignition box? Sorry bout the hijack.

I am, no problems :)

Why not....... Pertronix unit just sends "points signal" to MDS box, MSD box "drives" the coil....

The Pertronix unit does not care what coil MSD box has connected to it...

The only problem with using a low ohm coil is if the box goes dead and you decide to bypass it and use the pertronix module to fire the coil, unless the module is designed for that coil you will need an inline resistor (I think the instructions for the module state what resistor to use)

before i put the box in i was running the pertronix and a blaster2 no problem i haven't had to use a resistor. i can't vouch for the compufire, im still on my first module after 5yrs (knock on wood)

I do believe pertronix offers two different modules, one for original style coils and one for low resistance coils. as for compufire I think there is only one and it wont work with a low resist.coil. I fried my first one that way.
