  View original topic: Fuel pump for 1835cc engine

I have a 1967 Vw deluxe bus with an 1835cc engine, with duel Kadron carbs. A mechanic put in an electric fuel pump thinking it would get more gas to the carburetors and help it run better. I would like to go back to a regular fuel pump. What fuel pump do I put in?

A stock mechanical fuel pump will work fine with your 1835. Make sure you get the correct pump and push rod for a generator or an alternater.

I'm running a stock Bocar mechanical on my 2180 with no problems.

if you were having probs with the electric pump , could have been the float bowls were flooding over, the kadrons dont do well at stopping excessive fuel pressure. Us less that 2lbs pressure , shoot for 1.5lbs.
Astock pump can pump out more that 2, so either extra gaskets or a slighty shorter pushrod can lower to the right pressure

Sorry for the dumb question but: how I tell if I've got a generator or an alternator?

Is there a box like thing on top of your generator/alternator? If YES then you have a generator. The box is the voltage regulator. There would also be a plate that you can remove to clean the generator brushes.

If NO box, you have an alternator. Cars with alternators don't require a voltage regulator.

Do you also have a picture of the horn button removed on the steering wheel? The horn on my bus was removed and I don't know how the wiring is brought up and connected. I have the wiring diagram but not how it's attached to the steering wheel.

Be careful here..... A 12 volt GENERATOR does not have a regulator on top of it. Only 6 volt generators have a regulator mounted on top of it...

However a 12 VOLT generator will have a long cylindrical shape the same as the 6 volt generator. 12 volt generators usually have regulator under back seat.... Also generator cases are steel and there for magnetic.

Also 73 engines equipped with MOTOROLA style alternators (AL78) DO have regulator usually under rear seat. Only later BOSCH (AL82) do not have external regulator.

The alternator will have the the definite different shape and are
aluminum (not magnetic)....

Also if stock, 72 and earlier should have long fuel pump push rod (4.25 inches) and use generator... 73 and later should be a alternator fuel pump (pump body sightly shorter) and uses a 4 inch push rod...
