These should get you headed in the right direction. There are a few redundant links since it's a common question.

Isn't it about time we make insurance info a sticky thread???
I know I've started my own insurance thread and it seems to be a question that we all face sooner or later?

| The problem with making a sticky is every state province and country has completely different rules. |

Sort of....... First off,99% of insurance inquiries I've read have been from within the US.The few I've seen that weren't,were from Canada. While different coverage IS required in different states, whether an insurance company will cover you or not seems to be sort of a "50 state" deal, with some being nation wide,(and SEVERAL exceptions in between). Kind of the whole reason it should be sticky in my opinion.......
If you look at how many Stickies are in the beetle thread,(for instance) I don't think it's such a crazy idea. You COULD break it down by state,(or providence,or country),within the sticky thread.
Just sayin'........ |

| i called my local state farm guy and he said they do not insure glass buggys. now the car is titled as a 67 beetle and they will insure that, BUT...they want to see the car, so that wont work. i guess if i can find a company that doesnt care to see the car i would be ok unless lord forbid i do get in an accident, then i spect there will be big trouble! maybe ill call geico next and see what happens. keep the suggestions coming, im on a roll now! | Find an independant agent that carries infinity classic collectors insurance. They covered mine no problem, and they have lots of pictures. The best thing about it is the price! |

Whats the name of the insurance that Dennis Gauge pushes on "My Classic Car" that runs on Speed channel?
I think that would be a good start. |

Aviva does a custom wheel plan in Canada. Aviva is a world wide company. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aviva
I have that Custom Wheel Plan. $2 Million liability, full replacement coverage for $18000 for $230 per year. |

| Do any of the insurance companies give a valid reason why they won't insure glass buggies. I understand if they are going to be used off-road but what about the ones built just for the street or show? |

x2 It's easy to get in Canada too. When I first put the buggy on the road they mistakenly sold me off road only insurance. |

| I got Hagerty to insure my entire "fleet" of VWs for about $300 a year BUT the buggy is NOT an offroad car and sent them plenty of pictures to confirm this - the one that cinched it was the picture of the ruler measuring ground clearance from my 1.5 quart sump. I HIGHLY recommend them - the nicest folks you want to talk to. |

I tried Hagerty they told me they DON'T insure Dune Buggies. I even told them I built it only for club events, parades, and VW shows,
and it was not built for any type of off roading. I also wanted to insure my 67 VW beetle, that they would insure but i told them I wanted to insure both.
But they still said no to the Dune Buggy |

And thats why I think we need a sticky on this. If you read the links I posted you will find so much varied information. For instance,if you read through those threads you'd see that I LEFT Geico because no matter how I approached them,(or how I refered to my buggy) they turned me down, yet others claim to have Geico insurance on their buggies.I made no fewer than 10 calls trying to deal with them. And then again......,I have state farm as does another samba member I know locally, yet people claim that state farm won't insure their buggies. My whole point is,YES insurance varies by region BUT if all the conflicting info was "stickeyed" at the top at least people could find the topic,(and links) easily and sort it for themselves it would be easier, but I'm pissin' in the wind apparently. If you look at (for instance) the beetle thread, there is so much stickeyed you have to scroll down to get to the current posts. The dune buggy forum has exactly three stickeyed threads right now,at least one is USELESS. I tried to post on the "map" thread and it was impossible. Probably the same reason very few people have posted to the map thread but as usual my idea was shot down so keep searching,(or don't) and start ANOTHER insurance thread,As for me,I have mine insured and I gotta go take a leak, hope the wind isn't kickin' up......... |
