I am just about ready to try starting my long-sitting '71 Fastback. Last two steps are crank the engine over without the spark plugs in to get the oil pressure up. Then put the properly gapped spark plugs in and see if she runs.
Is there any point in doing a compression test while I'm cranking it with the spark plugs out? |

I usually do the compression test with the plugs out. I lets the starter spin faster which means the engine is pumping faster.
It's also easier on the starter and you have to pull plugs to do compression anyway.
The downside is that on an aircooled engine you can't see if there's some crap under the tins waiting to fall in the sparkplug holes. |
