I hoping for some help and advice from the samba crowd.

I am 22 and wanting a split window bus. I have 5 thousand to spend. Either to buy one and drive it. Or buy a "fixer upper" and spend the money fixin it up.

I found this one close by.

There are very few busses in this part of the country.

Is this a good buy?

Thanks for the advice.....

looks like a decent deal go look at it if it is overall as good as the photo won't last long

One of the pictures concerns me.

You can see that fan has a block off plate over it where the air goes to the heater junction box.

i wouldnt worry about it it either has a merged header or j tubes or was to lazy to hook up the heater boxes

looks fairly decent, expect more rust than you can see in the rockers etc, the engine has no heater boxes hence the blocked off tube.
Ask him if he will take less without the stereo and then use the money you may save for more important stuff, like brakes/steering.

:D

looks possibly VERY reasonable. check that bus out for sure. and overall advice that you REALLY ought heed is to buy the most expensive bus you can. Put most or all of it in the purchase price and that will acquire you much more happiness and less stress. Tempting to go the fixer upper route but I wouldn't dream of it unless I had twice the disposable income you have. When I was looking for my bus I wanted to spend 5K. That was the MAX. Well, I ended up spending 6500 because I found a bus that was a steal for that price and it is much more solid than any of the 2-3K semi-projects I found and what I could've had done to them. just my thoughts.

It looks like the engine is cockeyed :-s . Looks like it'll be breathing a lot of hot air with no tins between the upper and lower parts of the engine. Not sure how much of a factor that is... It looks pretty solid, but if possible you should take a trip over and check it out carefully. Pictures can be deceiving.
