View original topic: Finally Got a '71 Squareback!
Euro1967 Sun Aug 17, 2008 8:05 pm

Although we are currently working on our Euro 1967 Bug, we couldn't pass up on the deal for this '71 squareback. Almost all original! Doesn't run, but engine did start with ether and idled, but died when given gas (can anyone say EFI repairs in our future?).

This car sat, with the windows open, in a field in the NV desert for 3 years before we got it -- check out the layer of "protective" dust on everything inside. Rust is only surface except small area in trunk. Straight body with only a few minor dents. Glass is good, needs new rubber. Pans, drivetrain, brakes are all good! Not bad for $550, right?

I think it was originally Clementine, but there isn't a color code sticker anywhere to be found. Cheapo paint job is peeling, and the color underneath is the orange-red of Clementine.

This was made in 10/07 with a strange VIN number of 3612046121. I know the 361 part, but the numbers following don't seem to match the Technical listing on Samba. Any thoughts?

This is going to be my daily driver around town, so we are going to get this running but not in the kind of resto job we are doing on the '67. Anyway, check it out and let me know what you think!

Thanks for reading!

We just covered it for the night -- I'll get one for you tomorrow. I think we might be missing the back crossbar, though, right?

Nice find, and welcome to the '71 fraternity! :D 8) You will find the Type 3 much nicer, especially when it is all in good stock shape. Oh, and even more cool is the center tray: do not see those every day.

First, buy the Bentley manual for type 3s. Then, give it the full tune-up, except no need to replace the condenser (oils, cap, rotor, valve lash, timing, points, etcetera). Also, when you are board out of your mind, read the F.I. sticky: it is only 80 pages of glorious knowledge!

Oh, and you might try buffing off the crummy paint, and clay bar the old. You might be able to save the original paint, but at least the crummy will not be trashing the looks, and the old will provide a better base fore the new paint, if you should want to, but it might be better if you are going the latter rout.

Nope they were 4 sided. I have a dealer installed rack on my 71 as well.

Sounds like you have too many slats. 6 X 6.
