I searched this out but didnt find an answer
I went to look at a pretty haggard 73 bug today , i know little about the motor other than the fact that one cylinder needs a helicoil for the stripped plug hole , but how hard should it be to turn the motor , i had no tools on me at the time but i figured id be able to turn it by hand , or would i need to turn it with a wrench?

You should be able to grab the belt or crank pulley and turn it by hand...at least a little.

Depends on how long it's been sitting. Unless one or more of the pistons are frozen by rust, you should be able to turn it easily. If you can't, assume something's up.
