I am presently rebuilding a pair of 36ers and require new valves, springs, and guides. I have NOS p+c's and the engines will be fully balanced. I want the engines to look completely stock but at the same time want to give them any improvements that wont damage their driveability and longevity.
What do you think about the following
33mm intakes, 28mm oulet valves
port and polish
mild cam regrind (suggestions?)
Is a stroker (69mm) worth it if you arent doing dual carbs?
Thanks

I'm just finishing my 36 with NOS Judson
Counterweighted stock crank (made by DPR)
WEB 86 plus 5 cam (reground my original)
A and A pistons and liners
I ported the stock heads as much as posible with-out having to weld them
NOS stock valves and guides
Lightened stock flywheel with 12 volt ring gear
The 36 hp thread in the beetle forums is awesome, lots of cool info |

Are you going to run the Judson in a bus? From the scant research I've done it seems you have to cut the cargo shelf to fit the air cleaner in a bus. I wanted to run the one I found recently in my '59 SO-23 but don't want to cut.

I will see if it fits in a bus but it's being built for my 60 beetle. I'd like to run it in my 58 SC for shits and giggles |

I think one of the support ribs under the rear deck needs to be sectioned for the air cleaner to clear; a few inches or so. |

| There is a ton of information on the 36hp thread in the oval section. If you are serious about getting some more power out of the 36hp engine then 18 pages is worth the read. That is where I got a lot of the ideas for my engine build. |

If your keeping stock exhaust and one carb dont waste time increasing the valve size....The stock intake and exhaust is just too restrictive. .....stroke or bore is all that will help you. Jet the carb up, remove the venturi or enlarge it . A mild cam will help a little as the 36 hp has really conservative valve timing. You can bore 36hp cylinders up to 2mm and find pistons or have dpr stroke you a crank (have it shotpeened or cryoed). I use the old 74mm Porsche crank with a 2mm overbore for all out. You can have any piston you want made fairly cheaply these days but with nos liners I would just stroke it for most usable power. The weak link is the crank which will break if constantly revved over 3800 or so rpm. Shot peening or other crack preventing process and a good core to start with is vital. Problem with stroking is compensating for the increased width of the engine..........especially the pushrods
For the easy way out with one carb, I would put a mild cam in it, up the compression(7.5), rejet/modify venturi and strengthen the crank. |

Volksworker, thats what I was looking for.
Ive read the oval thread end to end and though there's alot of great info in there, no one is talking from a streetable bus engine perspective and I question the durability as well as the driveability of what most people are doing. A bus is very different from a light (er) beetle and as I said at the start I would like it to look stock.
Looks like cam and stroke, jet and compression ratio will do well enough.
Thanks everyone.
On the Judson side, I heard you can fit one without cuts if you use a short intake manifold (cant remember what the initial purpose of this was). |
