View original topic: what is needed for my engine repair

wanted to get some opinions on my motor.
My goal is a dependable daily driver. i do plan on a complete new engine replacement next year. I want to get the current motor running as cheaply as possible in hopes of slowly building up my dream motor...

That being said my compression is as follows
1-148 2-132 3-132 4-140

smokes blue on startup for about 30 seconds so I figure valve guide seals are shot.

When I checked the valve adjustments all were at .006 except #4 was at .005.

Its a 68 square converted to dual ICT's. I found a huge vacuum leak at the base of one carb. the vacuum advance does not work and the car backfires and does not idle well. current vacuum set at 7.5BTDC using stock FI dizzy.

My plans are:

I just recieved a new vacuum advance I will install. ICT's do have vacuum port for vacuum advance.
Install balance tube to ict's.
repair vacuum leaks.
balance carbs proper.

my biggest worry is the comression and valve guides. i'm thinking from my measurements the topend is looking unstable. more than 10% disparity between cylinders and the smoke at startup. Question is how long will the motor last? Will it last long enough for me to finish the motor. just up and buying a new $6k+ motor in between without planning is not feesible.

TIA,
Jason

First off, air cooled VW's do not have valve seals.
Do you park your car on a slight incline. Remember, this is a pancake engine, and if the engine is not reasonably level when parked, some oil will seep past the rings. Then it smokes when started.
Your compression looks excellent.

That is a minor variation.

Get the distributor working properly.

Nothing wrong with that compression.
The smoke at start up is kinda normal. Especially if they have been sitting for a while. It is oil seeping past the rings.
Do you have any idea how many miles are on this motor?? Over 60K miles, and I would consider doing a valve job. Then you can get another 60K out of it.
Spending $6K on an engine is rediculous. You can build a good performance engine for under $3.5K, unless you are going turbo.

cool thanks...didn't realize there were no valve guide seals. yes the car was parked at an inclide.

no idea of the mileage. been sitting for years due to inop FI. then the 2nd PO tried to put carbs and a 009 on it. I removed 009 and timed it statically. did a balance of the carbs with feeler gauge and found the air leak.
