Hi All!

Well, we are getting more into our new 71 Square, and liking it more all the time. From the paint charts here on Samba (and from the actual color of the OG paint I could see on the car) we assumed it was originally Clementine, the only red available for 1971. But yesterday, when I looked inside (at the OG paint protected from the sun and not repainted), it definitely looks like a more ruby red than orange-red. My car was made in 10/70, but is a '71 by VIN number (361...). Is it possible that my car was painted the Royal Red leftover from the 70 model?

Also, if you have a late square with either of these colors, could you post pics here so I can see what they look like? I tried the Gallery, but just too many random pics to search through....

Thanks!
Lori

No, it's probably L31F "Iberian Red" which was a 1971- only colour. In fact, you can find it in the Type 3 general paint chart at the very bottom of the Type 3 paint chart in the Archives, but, for some reason, it doesn't appear in the year- specific chart. There might still be a tag in the spare tire well with the paint code.

Incidentally, Type 3 model years begin on 1. August of the previous calendar year; e.g., the last 1970 would have been produced in July of 1970, and the first 1971s began production on 1. August 1970. The last two weeks of July were usually a vacation for factory workers as the plant would re- tool for the next year's production run.

Hope this is helpful.

My '71 still has the paint tag. It is Iberian Red.

I have an OG Clementine car, and it is quite Orange compared to red.
