im cheap ok? but i am not an idiot either. so am i asking for it if i use a used tranny to replace the one in it now? it seems like an afternoon of work and around $80-100 bucks for a tranny or even wait for the guy who sold it to me to find one (maybe) in storage for free. some tell me no dont do it but im thinking its an afternoon of work and im risking a few hours to swap back the og if the "replacement" does not work.....thanks again.

I'm cheap too. If'n you got the time to do this exercise a couple/few times, by all means go for it. Right now the Westy has a trans I pulled out of a Bus abandoned by the side of the road with a 'FREE' sign on it. A little whiny in second, and an odd roar when off the throttle at speed (might not be the trans) but plenty fine enough until I fix reverse in my other 002, which aside from the busted reverse is the BEST VW trans I've ever had.

Besides, every time you pull the motor & trans is another chance to fix something that got by you last time, but you couldn't get to your FLAPS for the $5 part......

Go for it.
I bought a used trans for $200 but it had the 4th gear pop.
Went back to the guy and exchanged it for another used trans .
Somewhat loud and also crunchy into 2nd, but what the hell.
Still rolling 3yrs later...
