I bought a Fastback, the engine was in boxes. A friend gave me a engine out of a Bus #U5029770 which according to my research is a 71 type 3 engine.
My question is can I put that engine in my 1970 Fastback and how hard will the FI system be to hook up. Plus is there a special connection for the injectors or will a hose clamp work. I have over 25yrs experience with Type 1's but this is my first FI Volkswagen. Thanks for all your help.

If all the pieces are in the boxes you can rebuild it back to original. You can buy good used parts in the Classifieds Here! I just used 5/16" fuel line and worm drive hose clamps to replace all my original fuel line with the woven cloth covering because of pin-hole leaks! First thing you better get is the Volkswagen Service Manual Type 3 1968-1973 by Robert Bentley from www.books4cars.com.

Do not use worm drive clamps. Use clamps designed for fuel injection hose.

FI clamp on the left, worm on the right; the latter cuts the outer jacket of the hose.

What shape is the FI wiring harness in? Is the ECU still in the left fender? Fuel pump still mounted on the right side of the front axle?

'70 and '71 pretty much used the same set of FI parts, so you lucked out.

I believe everything is there. The car hasn't been driven since 1978. Found it parked in a barn. Hard to find rust free cars in Ohio. It also has dealer a/c, any suggestions on what to do with that.

Dealer AC... dash part is good, compressor probably shot and inefficient, look here for modern replacements.
