I went & looked at a 69 Squareback that;s for sale in my area today.
It is very clean only problems I could finf are:
1 Pass window is very hard to rool up or down,
2 looks like it could use all new Ball joints
3 Both front & rear shocks look like they are the original ones.
4 Windshield has one crack running down from the top in the center almost all the way to the bottom.

Here is a little more info. It is all original.
Paint is light blue & very faded, the interior is in very good condition, This is the second owner that is selling it.
Has the original Owners manual.
Has 4 extra rims that have new sstudded snow tires on them.
Here is the main thing that is not original about 8 or 9 years ago the current owner was having problems with the starting & running smooth & the only VW repair guy in the area took out the FI system & put in dual carbs. To me that is find because I can work on carb & know nothing about FI.

Now for the price he is asking $1600 for it.
I am going to offer him $1200 telling him it needs Ball joints & shocks which will cost close to $400 to have them all replaced.
Wish me luck & let me know what you think about the Car.

You can get the ball-joints and good shocks for $200. Any rust, especially in the battery pan area or the heater channels/rockers?

You probably meant $400 for a mechanic to replace, my bad.

Thx can you let me know where to buy them?
So far I find ball joints $ 30 -$33 each total $120 - $132
Shocks Cofab $20 ea KYB G2 $30ea.
Plus I have to either pay sales tax if I can find them around here or shipping.
I can install the shocks but will have a shop install the ball joints

Pan is solid no rust & I did not see any rust inside or at the heater channels

Sounds like a pretty decent deal.

The ball joints aren't that bad. You can actually do it with hand tools. They're bolt- in, not press- in. just make sure you have a Bentley or PM me and I'll scan the pages and email 'em to you.

You'll need a shop to align it is all.

Thx for that info on ball joints.
I have had & worked on Bugs, Buses & Things and I thought the ball joints were the same. I have never had a type 3 before.

I have a 69, and I think its the best year of square (IMHO). That sounds like a good deal. Id do it.

I just finished ball joints(lowers)in the '63 tonight.I took some pics along the way and think I may type a tutorial on it so it will be here in the forum for reference.

I have the vw shop manual with the procedure that I could also scan pics for you also and then there's this...
