| Well I have a 74 bus.Its a pop top camper. The motor wont start now and makes a loud knocking noise inside.Compression is 1=140 2=130 3=80 4 =50 so it doesnt even have compression to start. Its a leaking plenty of oil too.So what I want to know is ...has anyone put a diesel motor in a bay ?Is there any bays that came diesel stock?Im looking to put a diesel motor in it, so if anyone can help me out its greatly appreciated .Thanks. |

Anything can be done, but to turn a bay into a diesel would be a major engineering and fabrication feat or a hack.
Bays never came with diesels.
A water cooled vanagon makes a much better diesel project than a bay. Diesel engines were an option on vanagons. |

It would be cheapest to fix what you have.
Get those dual carbs rebuilt while you are doing it. |

The type4 engine is actually a great platform for more power. The most popular is the camper special. Here are a few threads on it.

My understanding is that this engine will work best if you use a later 091 transaxle.[/quote] |

| Fixing what I have involves taking the whole motor apart just to figure what it is , i wanted to just do a swap.Im not sure on the budget yet.Maybe I should just start taking it apart. |

You could buy a rebuilt engine and swap it in. You could also buy a used one to put in also. You run the risk of being where you're at now if you do this and don't hear the engine run before buying it. I say rip yours down and see what's up. May be something that can be fixed easily.
Good luck |

| Thanks for the replys... im still debating on what to do.I would gain some more knowledge on ripping it apart rather than just throwing another one in. |

I'm with you on your first idea. Put a diesel in it. Yes, it will take some engineering. Somebody else has done this. His name is David Schwarz.
His website is:http://motorheads.net/vw/turbobus/
Pretty well thought out.
Using a 1.6 turbo diesel has some advantages. good fuel economy. Simple engine. Electrical control is 1 WIRE!
This setup SHOULD get about 30-32mpg.
Read David's website. He is a sharp guy.
You could fix the type 4 engine. and fix it. and put a lot of gas in it.
