| I have a 70 Baywindow with a 1600 DP. The carb is a 31 pict. The bus runs great, but no matter what I try I can't get the bus to idle under 1200 to 1300 rpm. My mechanic says I need the correct 34 pict carb. Would the carb really make that much difference? A new 34 pict carb would run about $200. Is it worth the time and money to replace the carb or does it sound like a different issue? |

Your mechanic is wrong, the 1600 will run on a 30PICT. There are several things that can cause that and one big one is air is getting sucked in somewhere. That would be between the throttle plate of the carb all the way to where the manifold joins the heads. Make sure the fast idle for the choke is not engaged at idle. Vacuum ports in use have good hose, those not being used plugged. Rubber boots not split?
Do you have a vaccum gauge? |

Sounds like worn out carb to me, check for vacuum leaks and PM Keifernet about either getting yours fixed or getting another one.
Personally, I'd rather have a German carb over any of the new Brazilian crap sold today. |

| rebuild the carb, clean out the jets. i soak mine in pb blaster then clean out with carb cleaner, and use a thin tiny wire to get crud out, the jets that is. also i saw my choke was not adjusted nice....open way too much, also the pre heat hose seemed to help my carb a little too. kits are around $15-$20 bucks. good luck. yeah the new ones are pretty bad....best to buy a hi-quality used german one here. |
