i have a '71 westy and everytime i drive i get fumigated, i've cralled under there to close them but i can't figure out when they're open or closed. i unhooked the medal cord connecting them to the dash and when i leave them alone the left side is opposite of the right side???? i know, i'm probably not making any sense  ](*,)

Important to understand how the heating and cooling system works (most notably how the flapper system works attached to the heater control cables)....

if you dont need the heat, take the accordian-like tubes off and then you wont get fumigated.

thanks, i was just trying to close the flaps and the bowden cables aren't even attached to them. my step dad sais i can't take those "accordian-like tubes" off because things will crawl up in there and dust and dirt will ruin it. i understand pretty well how the heating works on it, i just couldn't figure out how tell if the flaps are closed or open with in the tubes

you dont want the flaps closed at all times because they help let heat out of the car. if you take the accordian things out, and bugs crawl in there, theyll be toast

yeah i thought that but what about having open holes for dirt and dust to get up in there?

its in front of the wheels, it shouldnt be much of a problem. i didnt have any for a couple years and my engine is running great. if it really bugs you, keep them on and just drive with the windows open.

the real root of your "fumigation" is a leaky exhaust. my dad used to call it "the carbon monoxide heater". so address that problem. if your heater cables are detached the flaps should spring closed. not sure? push the arm that the cable attaches to toward the rear of the car. if you want to disconnect the plastic tubes but you're worried about dust and other creepy-crawlies use tin foil (many layers) and hose clamps, or maybe heater block-offs for the fan shroud to seal the holes. keep on truckin.

alright, thanks man..........honestly it isn't that bad, just enough to get u a little light headed and buzzed when you drive but i should fix it anyways. i'll look into the exhaust and see if there's a problem there. so when the flaps aren't hooked to the cables they stay open? i figured they'd go closed but that's where i get confused, the left side does the opposite of what the right side does so it's hard to tell if they're both closed or if one is still open and the other is still closed or vise versa. i guess i'll just have to take it apart and figure it out myself
