Put 520 miles on it. I'll have it home for the first time tomorrow.

Fitted my shifter and pedals for the last time. Started welding flanges on my heater boxes (no more donut clamps  ) and ran out of welding wire. Freakin Airgas is closed til monday. :x

today i washed, waxed then removed the blue plastic from the new chrome. cleaned the engine compartment, and tried to find out why the horn did not work, took apart the wheel at least 5 times to no avail. fixed the dome light vacumed the carpet, flew a helicopter, then had my buddy break the horn button, made a face, hooked up the aircleaner hose to deck tin, traced out vac lines, Then on the ride home got the gen light. things were going so well. tried to start it , batt dead, let it sit tryed again worked fine, with no gen light... life is swell, now charging the battery to be sure, could be the new home made heater hose running next to the Volt reg.

Just got my first bug today (second car, after my POS '94 Corolla). I basically just got acquainted with it, put some WD-40 on a very squeaky glovebox, and next on the list is remove the Steelers decal off the back windshield. :)

Installed my air cleaners and ventless decklid. Looked at it, dreamed a bit more. Threw some more color ideas through my head. Thinking about either white or red now. Decisions decisions.

Just remember, it's not the hot side that's switched, it's the ground.

Got my "new to me" 72 Super home, plan on doing some minor tinkering with it today.

Go_Bug_n Sun Nov 15, 2009 7:49 am

Adjusted the valves. #1 intake was a bit loose. Both #3 valves had practically no gap! Engine sounds nice and even now.

Replaced square fuel filter under the tank. Cut the old one open. No rust :) but had some dirt discoloration.

John Muir was right. Bugs need to be touched often. They "know" whether or not their owners are mechanically inclined.

tailwaggers Sun Nov 15, 2009 6:14 pm

Adjusted the driver side windows and top attachment point. I was able to close the nearly 1/2" gap at the top of the windows and get a pretty good fit. Unfortunately I screwed up the door panels, so i'm ordering new ones.

Also adjusted valves and changed oil. After reading most of the 48 pages of the oil thread I wasn't sure what to use :(, so i just went with Castrol 5w-30 and half a container of Lucas Break-In Additive for extra zink.

Removed my rusty master cylinder and other rusty brake parts. What a job.

attempted to start theYounger's bug (74 std) -
cranked, cranked, cranked - sputtered roared to life - only to die.
cranked, cranked, cranked - nothing.

discovered was out of gas - put gallon in,
cranked, cranked, cranked. fired up
got seats in, brakes redone (pads, wheels + master cylinder, rubber lines, drums turned) wheel bearings replace - battery is charging now, and tomorrow hope to get it driving -
needs tune up, taking care of exhaust leak, carb adjusted (accelerator pump adjustment, most likely) and we'll be rolling :D

Got rid of the last owner's decals today. Drove her around for the first time. She runs wonderfully. :) Getting her registered and insured tomorrow.

(Over the course of the last several days)

Pulled the engine, removed the head with the stuck valve, replaced all the missing fasteners for the tin, replaced the intake manifold boots and gaskets, reassembled the engine, reinstalled it, and got it running again on my 74 standard Bug. I'm driving her to work this morning again.

Changed the oil and adjusted the valves. No she is happier than ever. Oh man can I feel a difference.

Mikedrevguy Mon Nov 16, 2009 5:26 pm

In the Younger's Bug -
addressed the exhaust leak - topped off the tranny fluid, adjusted the carb, adjusted points-gap, set timing, recharged batter, filled it up with gas.
Yeah, he owes me.
but he gets to replace the engine tin, fresh air heater hoses, this evening.

motor runs really well - (imho) only thing is the tranny's got a bit of a howl under load. gonna watch that -
oh, happy days.

OH, yeah - forgot, I worked on mine too - adjusted valves, checked points,
