Got bored so I measured the height from the ground to my front beam. A total of 5 inches. So, once I put the drop spindles and 135's on I should be looking at 2 to 2-1/2 inches off the ground in the front.

Put on a shiny new distributor cap, bought some parts (plugs, points, extra fan belt, extra fuel filter, oil, finally got a feeler gauge). Probably going to put in the new plugs tomorrow.

Well, I haven't posted in this section yet but I thought it was high time I did. Long story short, I purchased a 71 SB vert for my daughter a couple of years back with the intention of getting it restored for her in time for her to start driving. Well, she passed her written test a couple weeks back and it got me motivated to start working on her car.
In the past 2 weeks, we've pulled the engine, seperated the body from the frame and began a looooong restoration process. This poor thing needs just about everything either redone or replaced.
This weekend I finally got to begin to "reassemble" rather than "disassemble", lol. Yesterday I made a couple of patches and welded them to the vert reinforcement panels behind the front seats. Today, I fabbed a couple of patches for the front quarters along with a new lower section of the strut tower. I also made and installed a new brake line holder for the front passenger side.

The painter was a sloppy slob and painted the door latches IN PLACE. I've lived with if for several years, always with plans to clean it up.

I lost my temper with it this weekend, and used self adhesive 5mil plastic (the same stuff I use for the vapor barrier in the doors) to *carefully* mask off the are around the latch. Then I used a china detail brush to brush on aircraft stripper. very....very....carefully.

Waited 20 minutes, scraped all the paint off. Another 30 minutes cleaning and polishing and the latch looks perfect. I'll run the same procedure on the other side in three weeks.

I also gutted my charcoal canister and installed a new galvanized bung to make the contents replaceable. As soon as the procedure is finished, I'll put up a howto to document the whole thing. This is using Bookwus's long discussed procedure, that I know some people have done, but I've never seen documented in pictures and step by step.

Painted the base yesterday, everything is black. The red goes on tonight, the clear later this week.

Today I've prepped some last minute parts and rounded up hardware.

Today I got the front carpet pulled out, the side pieces, and the tarboard pulled out to see just how bad the pans were. Looks not too bad except fr where I thought it would be. But, I might as well replace the whole passenger side. I'm still debating whether or not to replace the drivers side. It doesn't seam to be too bad except up towards the pedal assembly. A while back my MC started leaking(replaced since then) and I'm pretty sure it leaked into the drivers area.

The bug was sputtering after putting in new plugs and new wires. Turns out the previous owner hadn't spaced the plugs when he put them in, and then proceeded to adjust the carb to function with the basically untouched plugs. So 69toga and I took it up to Bugzyla to get the carb adjusted. She runs like a beauty now. :D

for a while, I've had a faint 'fuel' smell in the cabin. It came and went - but was ever annoying and often nauseating.
However, today - it came to a head. After fueling up saturday - the smell of fuel was present, though didn't seem to dissipate, in fact got worse.
today, was out running errands, and noticed seepage, along, the pan near the vapor lines, there was a bit of fuel on the lower inner trailing edge of the front passenger side fender. Huh.
after the next stop - noticed a trail of fuel that followed the front of the car. But the fuel lines weren't apparently leaking, my suspicion was something amiss in the tunnel, but??????
when I got home, found the issue - fuel was pouring out of the gas cap. turns out the gas attendant (in oregon, we aren't allowed to pump our own gas) failed to secure the gas cap, with the obvious consequence.
that being said - I did replace the fuel filler sleeve (that stuff's expensive), and then also installed a fuel shutoff valve under the tank.
Long story short - hopefully I'll not have to deal with fuel smell again.

Two words, TOP LINE. They make they best stuff for super beetle suspension. A little pricey but I have heard that if you replace all your suspension stuff with what They carry, your shimmies will be gone.

I believe the syntax here would be that she jumped me . . . .but I digress. . . .and it happened again today . . .I dont know if my battery is not holding a charge, if its real cold (been below 20 lately), or if my generator is telling me its time is just about up.

I guess I'll just have to test it. :?
