so i got the '70 standard bug, and drove it about 100 miles today, with what sounds to me like a dead misfire somewhere, and it seems like it has no power, until i get over 2500 rpm or so. i'm gonna tune it up in the morning, and see if plugs, wires, cap, rotor and points help it any. so far, i'm in love with this car, even though it does need a ton of work, and shakes going down the freeway, like maybe the tires aren't balanced or something.... oh well, the deed is done, and the car is wicked sweet, and about 6" lower than my super was  i think it looks pretty slick, even with the 'in progress for a paintjob' look going on.

On your tuneup pay close attention to your timing and valve clearances. for the shaking, I had once happen when a shop changed my tires they cranked the lugnuts without allowing the wheel to center. took it loose, redid it by hand and no more shakes. :D . May have thrown a wheel weight also. Check your tie rod ends and ball joints. should be an easy fix.

welded up all my chrome trim holes and shaved my front turn signals...I'm planning on installing a euro bumper with the turn signals already in it

Cleaned the engine compartment, not done yet but its much better. Also found the cause of it not starting (bad fuel pump) Reinstalled fuel lines and gas tank the PO decided the problem of no fuel to the carburetor was bad fuel lines and that definitely was part of the problem but the fuel pump that didn't suck was the major issue. Hope to get the brakes sorted out soon and next week end maybe take a short test ride.

I love it when england gets 2cm of snow and the whole country is paralyzed. Can't be as bad as it was a few years ago though. At least in London you can walk places. Pub and tesco, that's all you need

Patted the "B" on the fender and reassured it another new windshield will be installed soon. Discovered after reading a lot of threads that I'm not the only one to have cracked a new windshield while installing it!

Spent most of today working on my car. I fixed the exhaust studs and replaced the heater boxes with j-tubes. Then i changed the oil in my brother's Jetta. Time for a cold beer. 8)

I removed the fenders and cut the front and rear ends off of the 71 Super.
Want to make a V-Rod.... chopped or roadster?????

Woke up to find the fuel line between the tunnel and engine cracked and was leaking fuel. Clamped it off and replaced it with OG line

I'm sure you've seen some of the contenders you're up against on the abortions thread :)I can't wait to see it finished.

I bought my Bug today. She's a 1972 Super Beetle. It was love at first sight...I guess that's why they're called "Love Bugs." I couldn't be happier. I must admit, though, that the electrical gremlins are a little unnerving. The dash lights only come on when I wiggle the switch and the right tail light is out, new bulb by the way. I've only driven it about 110 miles, so I'm sure I'll find a couple more before too long. It's a 24 year long dream come true though.

was driving it to school, when all of the sudden it sounds like a tractor, and is low on power. I figured one of the j tubes came loose, got it to school and checked, only to find the #1 spark plug had rattled loose. OK, no problem until i go to put it back in, and it slips and ends up stuck sideways between the cylinder head and cooling tin.... :x . looks like I'm going to Autozone at lunch to get a new set... Ill put in one of them and then have a spare rattling around...

I installed new headlight since the others were broken from when some one backed into me.

Will be installing the engine sometime this week, and get it back on the road.

thechief86 Thu Feb 09, 2012 9:25 pm

drove it to nashville, adjusted the timing, drove it halfway back, and towed it off the side of the road.... i guess tomorrow i'll be replacing the points in the distributor, or maybe adjusting them. i found out the hard way that if they aren't opening and closing when the motor turns, it won't run.

Today I purchased my 70 standard beetle new door panels front and back, exhaust and dash pad.

Purchased the wrong year window trims :( 73-77 SB got this from CL Thought it would fit on my 72 SB. But I am going to get rid of it. :( need room in the drive way.
