Continued building my engine......
Case together, sump plate installed with new screen, distributor, fuel pump, alternator stand.
Broke off the oil cooler stud in the case, ended up drilling it out and installing a Heli-coil. Seems to hold well.
Reinstalled cylinder head studs after cleaning all threads with a threading die. Did you know there are three lengths for these? I didn't until trying to put the heads back on. All the bottom studs are one length. The top studs....the center ones are shorter than the outer ones. Had to swap the left center ones with the right outer ones, AFTER I had installed....
87mm pistons and cylinders, and slipped the heads on. No head nuts, since I cannot seem to get the lower cylinder tin to go on the right side due to the case nut. This engine had the larger (Type 3?) air deflector/lower cylinder tin and the lower case nut by #2 cylinder is in the way.
What to do? Looking at getting a set of the earlier air deflectors and installing them.
Took a break Sunday and drove up to Manassas to the Bug Out. Three hour drive to Manassas, one hour wait in line to get to the parking lot. Big Bolivian festival at the fairgrounds across the road (where we had to park). Same thing happened last year. Last time I go on Labor Day weekend. I think I'll start going to the Memorial Day Bug Outs.
Saw lots of great ACVW's but I didn't take any pictures. Watched a little of the drag races. And did some shopping.....
Bought my daughter an RC Herbie (Fully Loaded) and for myself (and my Beetle) a Weber (genuine Weber) 34 ICT kit!!!! Long walk with a big box back to the car.
The (new) New Beetle 'vert (3 weeks old) performed outstanding during the trip. It was a comfortable seven hours in the car from Norfolk to Manassas and back.
Hopefully in the spring we'll go up and camp, and enter my 69 'vert in the show. |

Finished my longblock. Purchased the air deflectors, installed them along with the heads, pushrod tubes, pushrods, and rocker arms. Adjusted the valves and installed the valve covers.
Also purchased a set of painted DP cylinder tins. Next is the sanding and painting of the fan shroud and tins. Gotta stop and get ready for Hanna. |

Fixed my dome light, installed a new gas tank sender gasket and finally freed up occasional binding on the gas tank float. I've run out gas TWICE now because of that! LOL
Tomorrow morning it's oil change time along with valve adjustment. Gonna pull the carb for a cleaning and install new choke element. Then I'm going to run a new fuel line from body to engine compartment. All while the tranny is draining. Man that gear oil stinks.....
