A friend of mine killed his split case tranny in his 59 Mango standard earlier this year. I tore it apart for him so he could get it fixed. Two months later, the tranny is done but I'm running into a problem when trying to get the axle tubes back on. The plastic daisy bushings don't seem to fit and I'm unable to check the end play. These are the same bushings that came off the bus but the tranny case had been changed out. Apparently, along with a destroyed R&P, the case developed and crack and was unusable. The new case has a type 1 serial # but Mr Tranny guy says it doesn't make a difference.
Today, I took the tranny to a long time VW wrencher here in town who thinks I may need to get a smaller sized daisy bushing to work with this case. He wasn't 100% sure but he certainly agreed that something didn't add up. Not knowing anything about split cases myself, I have no idea. Mr Tranny guy says all the bushings are the same for split case and later transaxles. :?:
What saith the experts?
Speaking of transaxles, what are my options to repair two stripped out RGB bolts on my big nut tranny? |

Hmm,
From Parts List Volkswagen 1200 (type 1) up to Aug 1964:
"113 301 111 Plastic packing between transmission case and rear axle tube from Chassi No. 2 078 055."
That chassi number is somewhere between 4 and 15 Sept 1958.
Spare Parts List Type 2 Apr 1958 does not show that part number.
As for the stripped RGB bolts:

Since having stripped RGB bolt holes, have taken up drilling any hole that still looks good and drilling and tapping deeper so can use 50% longer that stock bolts instead.
Here is info on tap size:

x2
stripped bolts? tap oversize. I think the (non-metric) 1/2" size works. I could be remembering the size wrong though.
tap all bolt to spring plate holes, just to make sure they are clean. ( to stock size if the threads aren't stripped) I like to be able to screw the bolts in by hand. Makes it easer to not cross thread and bugger them up. |

Without going through into the box, can you give the measurement on how deep to bore? |

About 1.45" deep. Have drilled a bit too deep, and have had to weld up the very bottom of the hole going into the RGB. Welding only can be done with RGB opened up and gears removed. While easiest to drill/tap the RGBs off tranny have done it in situ.
Lower rear RGB bolt you have more depth in the material to work with.
A bottoming tap will finish those last threads down inside. Remember to use oil on the tap and one turn in and half turn back out breaks up the shaving and avoids locking and breaking the tap in there.
After installing two RGB trannies and having one bolt hole strip in each installation went to the deeper threads/bolts and never had a problem.
Make sure to grease up well the RGB bolts to keep out future rust attacking the threads.
For early RGBs fill the pocket of the RGB that faces the swing plate with grease (even old used grease works well) keeps water from being held in this area. |

Glad to help!!
Wonder if the old split case tranny might have been a "new and improved" version made later....
Do you still have that case?? Maybe with the part number off of it... |

| later cases were made with the daisy bushing and earlier were not...so the case will not accept the bushings if trying to make them work. |

My Beetle that has a Splitcase does in-fact use the daisy bushings. It's from an early 1960 Bug.
Since you have a Bug center section... |

we got a transmission rebuildt axle to axle (no tubes) that was out of a jan 58 bus. Tried to install them. The plastic daisys aka Kaiser spheres did not fit when the axle tubes were installed, or maybe teh tubes didn't fit with the plastic daisys. Checked the book, and it implied splitcase was daisey - free. But maybe the later beetles used them. didn't check the beetle books.
But basically, don't freak out if there is no room for them. you're okay. |
