Hi,

I've just purchased a split camper which came from the USA (California) and imported to the UK.

I would like to try and track down some of it's history or previous owners. Last info on Cal plates said Sept 2008 so assume it was only recently imported to the UK.

I even have the original service manual which shows the bus was originally went to New York from Germany.

Can anyone help? Where should I go to find out more?

Many thanks,

Martin

pics to see first if anyone recognizes it. Secondly, not sure if California DMV tracks previous owners. Here in NJ the MVC does not. try your luck with CA. You may get lucky.

I don't work at the DMV, so I don't see how that photo is going to help.

Hi,

I live in the uk and don't understand the US number plate system. In the UK a plate is registered and stays with a vehicle all it's life (unlesss a private number plate is purchased).

Only posting in the hope someone might be looking who owned the bus (could be a fake plate thought i.e a UK operator thought it would be a good selling point - don't think this is the case though)

Many thanks,

Martin

When I posted pics of my "new" '59 westy last year (Aug '07), someone posted pics they had from 1991 as they followed it to Bug Jam. Who'da known that there was someone else out there who not only recognized my bus, but had PICS?? You never know... the VW world can be pretty small  ! Thanks, again, SHSC! The photos you posted really added to my appreciation of the bus, but moreover, the appreciation of the bus shown by the previous owners :) . (damn, I love my bus!)

Good luck, Martin. (...and post some datgum pictures, already :P !)

-Kent

I recognize that plate #. It was my brothers old camper. He's doing time in prison for a d.u.i now. I'll never forget the time we got drunk and laid that thing on it's side over on Highway 49. We came around the corner and there was a deer there so he swerved into the embankment. Not only did the deer run the wrong way, but as we hit the deer, we hit the embankment and I'll be damned if we didn't kill both the deer and the bus. We called some buddies and they came and flopped the bus back over and we actually drove it home. Not long after that he sold it to some guys who claimed they could fix it...

As you may have seen above, the plate is useless.

Photos of the actual bus will help a lot.

Will post some pics today.

As for the bus on it's side - if it was repaired it was done very well.

Not too worried about posting plate - has no meaning to the bus or as it is now or me.

Thanks for your replies
