i have 1973 super beetle engine in a 1964 baja that was converted to 12 volt. i have one wire coming from D+ to the regulator then i have on the other side of the regulator is one wire going to ignition and one going to starter solenoid. then from solenoid i have it going to positive side of battery. also i have a wire going from DF to the regulater then to the idiot light. so why can't i get any sort of charge?

regulator shot, generator fried. Have you checked for current out of the generator? If current is coming out, check regulator. If no current at regulator, there's the problem.

yes there's current at generator but haven't checked regulator. i'll check and update.

yep its the regulator. the contacts weren't touching also the return spring thingy is ruined so it drains my battery when i turn the car off.

Is this the same problem as your other thread?

Have you checked the wiring diagrams here on the Samba?

Yes, they do! Choose any '67-'72 diagram and it will show a separate gen and reg, like your system probably has, since it's 12V.

thankyou so much. i have been looking at the 64 diagram when i forgot that i had a 73 12 volt engine. thankyou! :D

Also check that you are looking at the Bug pages. The default link from the main "wiring" link is for the Type 2.
