what would be better in performance. an open stinger or a baffled stinger?

misfitmark Sun Aug 24, 2008 5:36 pm

I'm running an open Empi bobtail header. I did have to re-jet for the lack of back pressure. Very loud though and the neighbors will re-introduce themselves. I install a spark arrester if I drive in the mountains.

I ran a stinger with stock 1600 and dont feel much difference with the baffle in or out.
When I had a muffler on, with the spark arrester I could feel a big difference in power.
The baffle doesnt seem to quiet it down much anyway.

Open stinger is LOUD! The baffles quiet it down a little and IMO sound better.

i'm running an open stinger on my 1600 dual port. do you think i would gain power if i put my trimil muffler back on?

shakira Sun Aug 24, 2008 7:19 pm

Bobtail is prob the way to go.

but for oldschool-coolness sake i stay with my open stinger <3

runge9524 Sun Aug 24, 2008 8:02 pm

yeah i know. i love my stinger. it looks so old school. i geuss i'll just stick with my open stinger. is having an open stinger legal in california?

I'd build a real motor and put a muffler on it

I run a supertrapp on the rail. runs best with only a couple disks, but gets more attention without the cap. ;)

Baja has a glasspack about 4 inches from the turbo. dead quiet at idle, but you can tell when it means business. :)

my bobcat with a spark arrestor is fairly loud, almost to loud, ill have to make a judgment call once i start driving it daily. but the spark arrestor gives it a cool sound when i let off the gas as the RPM's wind down.

Remember that Supertrapps actually flow more air the more discs you put in 'em. They work backwards of the the way you'd think they do, just by looking at them. Each disc is an airfoil, so you get a lower pressure area inside the can that pulls exhaust out of the pipe. More discs, greater pressure differential, better flow. You probably already knew that, of course.

They sound good, too. Not as "blatty" as my brother in law's straight stinger, but a bit deeper and with more tone. I had one on a bike I owned a few years back, (BMW R100), and wish I could find one for my K1100RS. I'm a fan.

alot of web sites have them, they are actually made for motorcycles and quads but they seem to work well with other small displacement engines.

i'll look into buying them if i get pulled over for my baja being too loud.

gilbequick Mon Aug 25, 2008 2:59 am

Are you guys talking about the whole thing or just the slip on kind? http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autof...toview=sku

thats just a spark arrestor, thats what i have, it does muffle a tiny bit but not that much. this is what people were talking about muffler wise

unfortunately the ricers have brought it to the cops attention that they can give out decibal violations. I've 'heard' that they are required to use a db meter at the time they pull you over. I was thinking of adding a valve to flip it to a muffler vs a stinger, but for now I'm leaving it as it came, with a stinger.

I drive mine daily with a stinger. 100 mile round trip. Its loud but im not back there with it im up front. I have ran it this way over 10 years

I know. but without any disks or the cap, it's basically a straight pipe with a megaphone tip. Obnoxious.

I like the look of a stinger on a baja. Mine has a baffle and it can be driven without much noise. Get on it and you know it's coming... You can hear my cheap radio while buzzing down the freeway at 70mph. It's not any louder than a motorcycle.
