I just resently bought a 1972 square back and just took the motor out. Getting a good look at the exsaust i found out that its pretty much usless.
I have a good system out of a type 1. I was wondering if it will fit my type 3. I was just going to use a piece of flex pipe to connect the fan output to the heat exchanger. let me know it this will work |

I believe that the rear portion of a factory type 1 system is to long in the back ( what would be right behind the rear apron and kind of under the bumper) If you look at the type 3 exhaust on your motor it looks all jumbled up and pressed against the fan housing, that area is where you will have issues with the type 1 exhaust. Regarding your flex tube to heat exchangers I have always thought that might work if you also use the 90 degree knuckles coming off the fan housing and criss-crossed them but I am probably wrong on that. I would recommend buying a used stock exhaust on "The Samba" or perhaps going with a type 3 specific header and a after market muffler. just my thoughts.... good luck with it.

No, Type 1 exhaust comes no where close to fitting a Type 3. Type 3 exhaust is a lot longer to clear the fan housing.

Get yourself a Type 3 header.
A Type 1 header will fit, but it will melt your cooling air intake bellows and warp your rear apron.

Or just put a stock on one. Internally they are made like an equal-length extractor system. Unless you are going with larger displacement, it will serve you best.

If you keep your stock heater boxes with either choice, you MUST, MUST, MUST keep and install the "flex" hoses that come out the side of the fan housing and go into the heater boxes. They provide the HB's with cooling air even if the heater is turned off. If you do not do this, the HB can overheat the cylinders directly above them.
