  View original topic: TOB Bad?????

Ok I pulled the engine today.

Upon separating the engine from the trans, I was over come by a "burnt" smell. Pulled the engine out and noticed that one of the clips that hold on the throw out bearing had fallen off. At first I thought that it fell of during separation, but after inspecting the TOB I saw little blimishes

as you can see in the picture. So it must of fell off during a cycle.

a little history about my problem, changed the trans fluid and adjusted the clutch one day. She drove fine for about 3-4 miles then it started to grind really bad and then just stop working (wouldn't go into gear as if the clutch was being held in) To this day even when in gear (not running) it rolls. check clutch cable, arm and even tried readjusting cable both ways. Nothing!

which is why I pulled engine to check and Replace TOB.

so what would happen if the clip came off as I think it did and what is that smell telling me. I know that it was caused but the TOB (i believe).

Thanks

mikey1two... that smell is/will be unmistakable if you ever experience a burnt clutch-disk, remember that smell... as it does not change. I would say that the clutch was over adjusted. "She drove fine for about 3-4 miles then", this is why I say this. Replace the disk and, if the clips/throw fork are NOT bent, re-assemble and try it again. You should not reuse that disk... I would, maybe, wire brush/wheel the pressure plate, flywheel, and the TOB faces before you put it all back together. Also do the other possible maintenance while you now have the motor out. (top off the tranny w/gear oil)

Ok, so should I just replace everything at once and have spare parts for emergency fixes later -or- just the disk?
I know nothing about the early/late model of things (dont even know the year of my trans for sure, 67 - 69, one of those years)
what do I have

Should I remove and take to local VW shop or will they know what I need and what is compatible with what I have by the pictures above?
What should I ask for?

they will know what you need i would just get a whole new clutch kit they come with a new throw out bearing clips clutch at pressure plate i think they are around 140

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Do not do this...
Quote: get a whole new clutch kit they come with a new throw out bearing clips
or this...
Quote: just replace everything at once and have spare parts for emergency fixes later
I think that this is your problem...

the "hook" on the right looks bent and this may be why the clip came off.
It still could be that you over-adjusted that clutch... I would readjust that before I put the motor back in, (inch and .25 at the pedal? Check you book.... I gave mine to somebody recently.) If you are really worried about that TOB, you could get one for cheaper than $140. The Pressure plate, and the flywheel have a very low rate of f@cking up, and the clips and fork are readily available. You will need "ring-clip pliers" to get the fork off of a "junk-yard" tranny. They won't know what it is, and you should get it for less than $5. Your bus would be better off if you spent that $$ on somethin' else...

I did measure the forks
Distance from one another at top and bottom, both measured the same. I will double check that tomorrow though.
A junk yard would be cheaper but as for the clutch, PP and TOB. Wouldn't it be a good idea to replace those while the engine is out? I see your point on the money being better spent on something else ( like a new front floor).

I do still need a new PP. My PP has Brazilian something or another on the PP, maybe try to get the German one.
Am I looking for the 200mm spring type or what? I do have a 12v setup.

And if some body could chime in on how to adjust the free play (and how to tell the fee play) in the clutch .... No need to burn another PP

Not there... at the creasent shape cut in each fork finger. Look at the arch that is ground into both sides.... this is the only reason why I mentioned anything at all. 8)
