My 81 air cooled runs well, but the screaming 67 horses need all the help they can get. It's equipped with dealer installed air conditioning, which probably hasn't worked since 1982. This means I don't have a glove box (and I need a place to put those gloves!), but I do have that nice over-bed storage system that I understand the later model a/cs eat up.
My question is: does anyone have any tips or warnings about removing the whole unit? The compressor belt is disconnected, but I figure there is still about 200 lbs of radiator/compressor/hoses & crap weighing me down. Any possible electronic problems with taking everything out? Anybody ever done this?
I'm offering an exclusive hot tip on where to view grizzly bears eating salmon right in front of your campsite to the best answer to my query. Thanks. |

Nothing to fear---if you verify that there is no pressure in the sysem.
Touch the schraeder valve on the back side of the compressor and see if there is any freon in it---
If not--start taking the unit apart--one piece at a time---
If for some off the wall reason the system has managed to maintain pressure for all this time--have it evac'ed first, then tear it apart.
Nothing unusual or strange about removing an AC system |

| Thanks TK, it's what I suspected. It just looks like I'll need one piece of tin to cover where the compressor sat. |
