I have been collecting parts for this, but have not done it. I have the crank handle and the proper hand crank gland nut. I now need the proper rear tin as I prefer not to just have a hole. That will be the hardest item to find as my guess only military things would have them or??

Anyway, check here in the classifieds for Thing. I saw a handle there not long ago.

Our buddy "Al Capulco" has one for sale on Samba for $100 including shipping.

I have listed a bunch of other hand crank bolts and handles below. But The handle posted above is the only one with the long end. Perhaps it is the only Thing handle. Are these handles generic or model specific?

This is a picture of the end of the Thing hand crank handle that "Al Capulco" has for sale.

I am unsure if the threaded shaft is the same on a 36 hp crank as a DHP engine but here is the 36 hp hand crank bolt for sale for $35

So did military Things have that option? A friend of mine has a crankstart on his single cab, with a 1600...it kicks quite a bit more than the original 36 hp...
:)
Does anyone have pics of the Thing crankstart apron, tin, etc?

I think the thing bolts have a hollow center to accomodate the pin on the thing only crank handle.

If you get a pic, please copy me on it.

I had a wanted ad for sometime asking for one. No one replied. <grin>

Am I correct only older 72 and back non USA Things had these? or is it Military Things only.

I have my nut and handle ready when one day Santa brings one my way.

*Hey Crofty, did you get your hard top?

LOL< I had to make myself the '73 tin because I couldn't find one either. I'm curious if it is similar to the bus/bug with the hinged flap to cover the hole.

I did get my hardtop. I'll have to post some pics.

I almost purchased a hardtop for $900 + postage from someone selling one here but the wife decided we needed a new Spa first. She needs to straighten her priorities! :)

At least the weather has been toasty lately so even without a top at all right now on my Thing, I have been driving it around town to empty my fuel tank of old fuel before real winter hits. So, I need a new top one day so I can drive around in winter.

Yes, pics please.

I never got the top.

She got a $8250 brand new spa with 4 speakers and a sub in it with light effects and all this hoopla.

She owes me is more like it!

My poor credit card that was paid off.

Can't wait. Our old one died and been a few months since we enjoyed warm bubbling H2O.

The tin on the thing has a hinged flap also

kme_eone Fri Nov 21, 2008 1:23 am

I purchased a hand crank bar and bolt on samba here and have it installed on my 74. I had a tin plate which has the flap and just transfered the measurements to my stock 74 THING front tin, and it works great.
This is why we have the hole in the center of the rear bumper. I will take a picture of the crank bolt installed on my THING and a picture of the engine tin I used as a template, I did have the tine up for sale which has the stock hole and flapper in it, but no one wanted it.
