Hello all, I just purchased a 1972 Ghia (yes it's a "fatchick", but it's a great car nonetheless) about two weeks ago and I was driving along this past Friday and I looked down to notice that my speedometer/odometer was no longer responding. I automatically assumed that some wire on the backside of it had fallen off or something. However I checked them in a nearby parking lot to find everything was fine. Yet it was still not working! Any Suggestions? And while I'm at it, does anyone know of a good online tutorial for fixing the clock?
P.S. I am only 17 and this is the first time I'll have done anything serious on a VW so I may need a more thorough run through than normal. (I HAVE helped my friend do minor things on his '78 Super Beetle)
Thanks! |

The speedometer has a mechanical drive. It uses a cable that goes through the left front wheel spindle. The end of that cable fits into the metal axle cap that covers the bearings. Your cable may have slipped out of the cap.
If you look at that cap it should have a small square hole in it with the end of the cable sticking through it. |

| so i finally replaced the cable, just to be safe since I didn't quite know what it looked like only to find out that the cable had snapped inside the speedo!! any suggestions as to how to get that piece of cable out? or should I just replace the whole thing? |

but it's not the clock that needs repairing....
The speedometer works, it's just that the speeometer cable snapped inside of the speedometer. |

You should be able to unscrew the cable end off the speedo...You may have done already.
A pair of small long nose pliers should allow you to pull the broken cable out of the speedo. It would look like a square pin on the end of a long coil.
Then you'd just stick the new cable in and thread it to the wheel hub. It should work after that.
