man wish i would have known about this site earlier.. i need some serious help! i bought a buggy with no title . NO PLATES .. just a bill of sale went to the dmv and this old hippie lady helped ,me.. and asked if i had a picture of it . which i did on my phone showed it to her and she loved it saying i remember those .. set me all up as a spcn vehicle but still a 74! .. all i had to do was get the vin # verified .. well it broke down and i didn't get it verified..went back to dmv(first mistake) and the second lady wasn't quite as cool.. said it was a 2008, needed smog, light verification, blah blah blah.. now what should i do ? i thought about getting the vin # verification and sending in the first registration stuff and just keep the part telling me about smog but I'm sure they would catch it...OR! try to register the pan i think this is my saving grace .. the only vin they have is a badge on the dash.. with a number on it they have no record of the pan vin so thats good at least.. AND then i got from the seller the original title from michigan..(not in his name) and a incomplete registration from california in yet another persons name.. it is definitely out of the system .god what a mess... i hope someone reads this ridiculously long post CALIFORNIA UBER ALLES

Sounds like you would be better off going with a bonded title
and starting fresh for $100

How do you go about getting a Bonded Title?

That sounds like the way to go!

Thanks in advance!!!

Well second lady is some what wrong.... Take in documentation that year of pan is 74. ( any source of documentation - books, manuals, web print outs - etc)... IF they object get appointment with BAR referee and have pan vin verified to correct year....

IT's kind of touch an go at times but be persistent in the way you want it done....

If you have "Bills of Sale" and vin numbers are NOT in CA DMV computer you have good grounds for aguing your case.... You may have to go over counter persons head to office supervisor to get results....

Here is some site(s) you may want to spend some time on....

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/spcns.htm

Just because permits for NEW construction are all gone, does not mean you can not have previous construction converted to SPCN.

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/spcnsreg.htm

Here is some online forms to assist you in getting registration...

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/forms/formsmost.htm

IN all cases NEVER VOLUNTEER and extra information.... Only answer specific questions, and think FIRST.... To much information only confuses the drones....

Some "lost" paper work can be a blessing.... Some times out of date papers from way off places IS NOT any help to you....

the pan is actually a 59.. but the bill of sale says its a 74 .. and so does the mich title oh! i also have a reciept from the hwy patrol i think who affixed the badge for the spcn vehicle # and that paperwork says its a 74 as well but again a different name on it .. should i show dmv that ? i think this one guy tried to register it here and at the time it wasnt old enough to be smog exempt and couldnt get it to pass so gave up and sold it.. and its been getting beat up in the desert by different owners ever since..but i gotta have it on the street ... its gonna be cool man i mini t actually..

I would go to a different dmv. Take the Michigan title with whoevers name on it and go from there. Probably have to do a vin verification but should go from there.

Local kid brought his buggy in from Oregon, it had screwed up title ( been parked for years) , DMV said 2008 and must pass smog... Well he was cruising it one day and got pulled over, guess what "no current title"... After going through DMV and highway patrol inspection and BAR referee (who screwed him) could not get anything "fixed"... He finally got fed up and went to different DMV office asked to see supervisor with all his paper work.... Guess what .... 1970 SPCN, Smog exempt......

It can happen but you have to make it happen....

AAA can only do certian "standard" transactions.... Lost or salvage titles or contested titles may have to be done at DMV ( I believe).... Have excellent, knowledgeable lady at local AAA office and there is just some transaction she is not allowed to do as she can not even access "them" in computer... Check with your local DMV "rep" at AAA if he/she is any good they can help you provide proper papers and information to present to DMV though.... It's worth a try... AAA is probably less threatening way, but I have doubts...

You are a AAA member aren't you?

You need to start by moving the hell out of Kalifornia., Then you need to get a bill of sale that matches the michigan title

Here is some "forms" that DMV provides that you can fill out to help process along....

This is easy. you use to have it registered. left the country for work on a ship or something came back a few years passes. it has been 10 years and you pulled it out of storage. the plates and papers are lost. you will get new plates pay no taxes for new car and no back fees. you get a new temp reg, go ge t the vin checked at a service place that does it. bingo you have plates. Been here done that.

who do you think would be most forgiving chp or AAA .. (i dont know who else could do it) on the vin verification ,, since the paperwork will call it a beetle but im gonna pull up in a buggy?

there are registration company's. I did mine at DMV is was kind of tuch and go when it came to what body type she had to put down. it came dwn to a convertible. I think AAA does the whole thing now days.

IF AAA can not get into computer, they can not do a thing for you......

Try to find a professional Vehicle Registration Services... Outfit who help with vintage or restorations or....

Have you looked in phone book for these services tro see if they exist in your area.

Try GOOGLE search with this search string "California Motor vehicle registration services -dmv"...

Get a policeman to do it. They can sign it off too.
