Bought a new 72 super beetle. Was running great. Started to hear a rattle, this is what we found. Would a belt that was too loose cause this, or something else. The generator seems to spin fine. There was one shim inside the pulley and 10 outside. I am new to vw's and to mechanics. Sorry if this is obvious, thanks for the help.

| Probably just at the end of its service life. Just get a new pulley, that's it... |

A belt adjusted too tight will cause that.
If you don't have enough shims between the pulley halves, the two never set against eachother fully. It becomes the pop can effect. Enough rotations and the pulley starts tearing up. The other style pulley will actually come apart at the spot welds because of it.
The pulley halves should be seated all the way against eachother (against the shims anyway) to keep this stuff from happening. |

Oops...
I just tightened the belt last weekend  .
I'm running a cheapo chrome pulley now, just to get me back on the road.
Thinking of getting this American made one from TDC Auto through the Samba ads.
