View original topic: Trailer light converter for snowflakes and 3 wire indicator

Hi all. I am in the UK and am about to put the correct snowflake lights on my late '60 bug. I have a newer indicator 3 wire setup and have read all of the articles about the trailer light converter. I am based in the UK and NOBODY sells these here. So I am going to ask a friend to get one from the US. Can somebody tell me EXACTLY what to buy and where from so I can pass the details on. I believe in the US you have a shop called AutoZone and I am told that they sell them there, but I need to ensure that my friend gets exactly the right sort!

I am also just finding out if the snowflake setup is in fact legal in the UK (as it it is not in other european countries as far as I know).

Thanks in advance.

You can order directly from here. They ship internationally. Just check the link at the bottom of the page for International Shipping.

Hey that's great! Thanks! They offer two types but seem to contradict themselves:

-------------------------
Late-model Kit: Converts 3-wire towing vehicle (separate brake and turn signal bulb) to 2-wire towed vehicle.

Early-model Kit: Converts 2-wire towing vehicle (one bulb for both brake and turn signal) to 3-wire towed vehicle.
-------------------------

I would assume I want the 'late model' which is 3 wire to 2 wire, but it then states that this is not for a single bulb!

Thanks

Yes, 'late model'. Running lights 'pass' thru the converter. Just the brake light and both turn signal wires are on one side. Two wires come out, one right, one left, to the brake/turn filament.

you have the three wire system on your bug (one wire is your stop light, one wire for your turnsignal, and one for your parking light) the trailer light conversion kit (three wire to two wire) you need to use the original wire for your parking light straight to the bulb and you will need to hook up the stop and turn signal wires to the trailer kit..... it will turn your stop and turn signal from two wires to one wire, if you ZOOM IN on the trailer kit photo you'll see what i mean :D

When you order that JC Whtney wiring converter the link on the Whitney website will list two of them to choose from...Read the description at the bottom carefully because they have two...A 3 wire to 2 wire, which is what we need...also is a 2 wire to 3 wire which is what I ordered by not reading the description...whoops!

If you are in the U.S., don't waste your money at JC Whitney. Just go to Autozone and get one for $10. Save time and money on the shipping.

I shopped around locally and Auto Zone, Orielys, Pep Boys did not have them...Napa had one but it was the 2 to 3 backwards just like the pone I ordered that did not work. I have made a circuit with 4 , 5 pin SPDT relays that works but if I don't have to do all that wiring would be nice
Here are pics of my test panel i put together,,,

Also excuse the rough wiring..If i go this route I will clean it up.

Wow, great job on figuring all that out! That test box is awesome. I had to try 3 stores before I finally found a converter. All the stores had a slot for the converter, but it was always empty. Finally found this one at autozone.
