Hi all......
first time posting on this forum

I've an '82 GL usedtobe diesel, now has an 1800 I4
It's been my daily driver for 10yrs.

I'm having shifting issues
It's NOT the tranny ( newly rebuilt, I have total confidence in it)
I think it's the shift linkages that are worn or wonky.

I drive around for a half hour or so, go to turn a corner, shift to second, can't find it. try third, then second again, and I can find it.

Unnerving. I don't want to get locked out of gear after dark in the rain etc etc etc....

Has anyone had experience of adjusting/rebuilding/tinkering these shift linkages?

just to be clear- I've got the early pattern, with a linkage above the gastank( oh lucky me!) and the golfball thingy on the tranny end.

any info or comments welcome

Bill,

I can't help you in particular except to tell you to use the search for shift and linkage. It has been discussed quite a bit recently.

I had issues with mine, but I was very new to these things and had my mechanic fix the linkage, what an amazing difference.

I did have the 4 bolts come loose that hold the shifter to the floor, they have nuts that you can tighten from under the van, by removing the spare you can access that area. Check those to be sure, but it sounds like a linkage issue.

Good luck.
