So I am in the process of redoing my beetle and have decided to also go with dual port heads and dual carburetors. I have a stock fan shroud and got a couple of EMPI intake manifolds and Dellorto DRLA 36 carbs. The problem I am having is with the clearance around the fan shroud and intake manifolds. As you can see from the pics I am not able to attach the carburetors. Would using a doghouse style fan shroud allow me the clearance I need or should I get a different set of intake manifolds? And if I should use different manifolds what ones would you use instead of the EMPI ones? What would you all suggest?

I already have the dual port heads. And the engine I have was rebuilt only two years ago by the PO. In a few years I want to upgrade the engine to a 1776 so at this time a new engine is not in the cards since I don't think I can sell it to my wife as she thinks that I have already spent too much on the car anyways but that's my problem to deal with. Based on my research a doghouse style shroud and intake manifolds cost the same either way you go, which is around $50-$80. This is an easier sell to the wife, but not both as I don't think it is neccessary and neither will she. I have spent a considerable amount of time here on thesamba.com and feel that I would get some good feedback based on the knowledge that I have aquired thus far, but at this time I need a little nudge in the direction I should go with this.

I cant see the top of your fan shroud but heres a pic of 1600 dp dell setup. You have to attach the carbs to the manifolds to get them in, its tight on mine but it works

Your shroud looks like mine. I will have to give that a try and see what I come up with.

Here's my old 1776 with CB manifolds and dual 36 Dellorto's... it fit just fine.

I think EMPI is your problem.

Glenn,

Do you remember which model of manifold you used from CB? I was just looking on their website and just based on their selection I would need to get the 3170. It looks a bit more short and stubby then what the EMPI's are.

Thanks again,

rjwmam

Hopefully Glenn will answer your question regarding the intakes. I have one. Are you planning on installing flaps in your fanshroud? You really should since your engine is at the stage when it's easily done. Don't forget your thermostat and all the linkage parts, springs and clips and bracket, etc. Here's another. Are your cylinder tin covers aftermarket? They look brand new. Do they have the air diverters in them that evenly direct cooling air over the heads? You certainly want that.

Are the flaps the baffles inside the fan shroud? If so they are there as the shroud has been untouched since I took the top end of the engine apart. As far as the head tins go,they are after market from jbugs. If the air diverters are the v shaped peices welded on the inside then yes they are there. If these are not the diverters maybe I can do a little fabrication. As far as all the other stuff goes, I took my time taking things apart and putting them in zip lock bags and then stored in boxes that are marked so everything that was removed when it was torn apart will go back on. I guess you could say that I have a beetle in a box. Thanks for your help. I could not do this project without thesamba.com since this is my first one.

Sounds like your cylinder tin covers are good to go by your description. Do a "search" on fanshroud flaps. They are the moveable shutter assemblies, one for each side, that bolt into the base of the shroud. You should be able to find lots of pics of the set-up, and how it connects to the thermostat rod and all the rest.

I suggest you have all original factory VW engine tin (nothing aftermarket). This way everything fits correctly and there are no modifications. You can count on most all the items that Jbugs sells not fitting/funtioning correctly. Go with the CB manifolds or original Del's.

I just want to give you all an update on this. I went with a couple of CB Performance manifolds and everything went together real slick. Thanks for all of the advice. Once again another Samba user completely satisfied.

The heads, are the difference

guess he doesn't know he looking at Dual ports heads LOL..

You have manifolds on there,, but no carbs ???? you not showing us anything "" it looks like they'll fit...

The carbs won't ?????? I know years ago I did run into a guy with that problem,, we turned the carbs and linkage,, but that was before Empi sold this kind of parts..

I'd bet those are amde for a 36 F/Housing

A doghouse fan should is the same width..as yours
