Big Cap 40hp distributor are only good for a stock 40hp application.
The Bosch 010 came on 59-60 Type 2s. |

If the engine is a single port, the 009 may work just fine, especially if it's a good quality German one.
The "fat-boy" big-cap type distributor, like any VW distributor, it was designed for a certain range of applications, and I'd not use one unless you were using a 28PICT, 28PICT-1 or 30PICT-1 carburetor to provide the vacuum signal to it.
I've said this many times here on theSamba before, years ago when I changed from a (German) 009 to an old "fat-boy" distributor on my big-bore 40HP engine, I hardly noticed, the performance and fuel economy were virtually identical for me.

| Nothing is wrong with an 009 distributor. 90% of the aircooled VWs still run them. The problem is when you start buying 009s that were made in China, Brazil or some other foriegn country beside Germany. Hold the distributor upside down, the country of original will be cast into the body |

They only say GERMANY. If made in Brazil they don't say it. And Bosch never made OO9s in China. |

I haven't looked at one of those Chinese knock-offs lately, what do they have stamped on them?
The good German ones though, they look like this:

| The issue with 009s are some people swear by them, others swear at them. A 009 was one of those multi-purpose, multi-year dist. I had the same issue you had, I had a rebuilt 65 dist (40HP) on a 1600SP with a 67 30 PICT-1(power fuel type 30 PICT-1). I had a hard time getting up to 65 for long periods of time, plus my mileage was suffering (20-23mpg). I went out and found a good used 69 Dist, timed it correctly, and noticed I have a better crusiing speed overall and economy (24-27mpg). The reason, the 69 had more vacuum advance than the 40HP. I have since rebuilt a German 009 and I am using that one as a back-up dist in case the 69 Dist fails. |

The OO9 was a GENERIC aftermarket distributor and never was stock on a VW vehicle. It was marketed as a "one size fits all" and put on everything from 36hp to 1600 to Type 4 and 356/912. |

Right, thats what was meant by that statement Glenn. The 009 was even used on industrial VW engines, it covered everything(multi-purpose) and it could be used on any VW(also multi-purpose and multi-year). Im sorry if you thought I thought it was stock on a VW, I knew it never was. |
